GM announced that its investing $51 to cast Siliverado EV drive units, but don't confuse the die castings for drive units with mega castings of Tesla.

It's because what Tesla does a megacasting, but GM's investment is for drive unit casting.

Yesterday GM announced a $51 million investment in its aluminum die casting foundry located in Bedford, Indiana. The funds will be used to install new equipment at the Indiana facility to produce drive unit casting for the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV.

“Our Bedford operation is one of the leading aluminum die casting facilities in the world. And this investment is a testament of our confidence in the employees at Bedford. This investment is another example of the company bringing along our workforce in our journey to an all-electric future, while we strengthen our current products,” said Phil Kienle, GM vice president of North America manufacturing and labor relations.

The Silverado EV, which is expected to Debut on January 5, 2022 at the Consumer Electronics Show, isn’t the only GM vehicle receiving die-cast parts from Bedford. According to local The Detroit News, the die cast plant has already produced electric drive unit castings for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup and the 2024 Hummer SUV.

All modern drive units are cast aluminum. how is this news? Oh now i get it! If Tesla mentions a new process, The OEMs have to shout OH WE KIND OF HAVE IT TOO! WE KIND OF DONT.

This highlights the difference between conventional diecasting and Tesla's innovative Megacasting. As always it is good that GM/Chevy is doing some promotion and recognition that there will actually be an EV Silverado built someday, even though the official debut hasn't happened yet.

Leading die casting facilities in the world? Just like GM is the leading EV maker in the US while not having any EVs for sale. What a joke of a company and a joke of a management team!

GM follows Tesla lead in casting. What's going on, Biden said GM is the leader in EV ???

Heck motors and drives have to be made somewhere. These are small castings. You or I can easily pick up these castings with one hand. No difference in how these or suspension parts are made. So big deal they are just likely upgrading some of the smelters. This is just a PR announcement.

Die-cast is very old. It's the size and mix metal alloy which is important. GM cast probably gets stuck and workers get injured.. work comp, lawsuits.. or pay union dues ... Tesla mega casting saves on injuries I'm sure.
