As Paulb pointed out above... You have a fairly high chance of screwing up the surface of the housing. Cleaning the mating surfaces for a proper seal has to be done very carefully and very evenly.

Oh wow a metal thermostat housing. Haven’t seen one of those in a while.

You should make sure the mating surface is still flat, using an abrasive tool like that will round it off.

Careful! They will still take some metal, put a straight edge across that, make sure it’s still flat
