"Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" from the musical HAMILTON
Performed by Alex Lacamoire, Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda

[WASHINGTON]
Let me tell you what I wish I’d known
When I was young and dreamed of glory
You have no control:

[WASHINGTON AND COMPANY]
Who lives
Who dies
Who tells your story?

[BURR]
President Jefferson:

[JEFFERSON]
I’ll give him this: his financial system is a
Work of genius. I couldn’t undo it if I tried
And I tried

[WASHINGTON AND COMPANY]
Who lives
Who dies
Who tells your story?

[BURR]
President Madison:

[MADISON]
He took our country from bankruptcy to prosperity
I hate to admit it, but he doesn’t get enough credit
For all the credit he gave us

[WASHINGTON AND COMPANY]
Who lives
Who dies
Who tells your story?

[ANGELICA]
Every other founding father's story gets told
Every other founding father gets to grow old

[BURR]
But when you’re gone, who remembers your name?
Who keeps your flame?

[BURR AND MEN]
Who tells your story?
Who tells your story?

[ANGELICA AND WOMEN]
Who tells your story?
Your story?

[WOMEN]
Eliza

[ELIZA]
I put myself back in the narrative

[WOMEN]
Eliza

[ELIZA]
I stop wasting time on tears
I live another fifty years
It’s not enough

[COMPANY]
Eliza

[ELIZA]
I interview every soldier who fought by your side

[MULLIGAN/LAFAYETTE/LAURENS]
She tells our story

[ELIZA]
I try to make sense of your thousands of pages of writings
You really do write like you’re running out of—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
I rely on—

[ELIZA AND ANGELICA]
Angelica

[ELIZA]
While she’s alive—

[ELIZA AND ANGELICA]
We tell your story

[ELIZA]
She is buried in Trinity Church

[ELIZA AND ANGELICA]
Near you

[ELIZA]
When I needed her most, she was right on—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
And I’m still not through
I ask myself, “What would you do if you had more—”

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
The Lord, in his kindness
He gives me what you always wanted
He gives me more—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
I raise funds in D.C. for the Washington Monument

[WASHINGTON]
She tells my story

[ELIZA]
I speak out against slavery
You could have done so much more if you only had—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
And when my time is up, have I done enough?

[ELIZA]
Will they tell our story?

[COMPANY]
Will they tell your story?

[ELIZA]
Oh. Can I show you what I’m proudest of?

[COMPANY]
The orphanage

[ELIZA]
I established the first private orphanage in New York City

[COMPANY]
The orphanage

[ELIZA]
I help to raise hundreds of children
I get to see them growing up

[COMPANY]
The orphanage

[ELIZA]
In their eyes I see you, Alexander
I see you every—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[ELIZA]
And when my time is up
Have I done enough?
Will they tell my story?

[COMPANY]
Will they tell your story?

[ELIZA]
Oh, I can’t wait to see you again
It’s only a matter of—

[ELIZA AND COMPANY]
Time

[COMPANY]
Will they tell your story?
Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?
Will they tell your story?
Who lives, who dies—

[COMPANY]
Time…
Time…
Time...

[FULL COMPANY]
Who tells your story?

Man what really hits me is when Eliza says, “When my time is up, have I done enough? Will they tell my story?” It makes me want to cry for some reason

I always imagine Eliza aggressively glaring at Washington when she says "I speak out against SLAVERY."

When I saw _Hamilton_ for the first time, at the end of this song, I just kept thinking, “You did it, Eliza. You did it.”

Why am I crying for people who died several hundred years ago in a song I've heard at least 5 times?

Here's the brilliant thing about this show. It's not just about Alexander. That's the thing not a lot of people notice. Some will say the musical is Alexander's story, others will say it's Eliza's. But they're both wrong. The musical isn't called Alexander Hamilton, or Eliza Schuyler-Hamilton, it's just called Hamilton. It's about both of them, Alexander AND Eliza.

At the end Eliza gasps and holds her hands to her heart, it's not her dying, it's her seeing us through the fourth wall SHE SAW US, SHE SAW US THEIR TO HEAR HER AND HER HUSBANDS STORY.

So you know at the end of the movie with Eliza screams like yeah you know what I mean basically it’s not Hamilton grabbing her hand and bring it in it to the front. It’s literally Lin bringing her to the front and being like hey we’ve told your story like that you know that like theory about like how to move onto like the afterlife until they’re like whatever whatever is completed that was her mission to get to it tell everyone’s story and Lin told her story so I am really crying right now, but yeah he did, they broke the fourth wall.

Eliza’s part of this song is one of the most beautiful broadway pieces I think I’ve ever heard. I cry every time i hear it lol. She was so devoted to this man after everything Alexander put her through. She raised funds for Washington Monument, spoke against slavery as a WOMAN in her time, and established and specifically cared for the children of the orphanage. This woman was so far ahead of her time. She pushed through grief and betrayal and does not receive enough credit. She was truly a trailblazer. May God hold her in comfort up there.

After listening to this whole playlist and then looking back on the start of it, you can really see the difference in emotion from the beginning to the end. It gets so somber and melancholy, while still having that hint of achievement and finality from Eliza's perspective. I fricking love this musical man 😭😭😭
