I love this. "The Civic is a good rallycross car!" *shows videos of Civics not rallycrossing, then doing it really poorly, then wrecking.*

Why go for an Impreza when you could get a legacy for less.

I totally agree with 7 in the FWD category. The Celica is an amazing and legendary Rally vehicle. I’ll definitely try getting one and customizing it to be completely safe on the track, like adding racing seats and a roll cage. Maybe even some Rally bumper lights.

This has been mentioned in the comments, but I feel like I should expound a bit on the Celica:

The ones in the clips in this video are all WRC-prepped Celica GT-Fours, mostly ST185s('90-'93) but a couple of ST165 clips('88-'89). Both the ST165 and ST185 were sold in the US under the Turbo All-Trac moniker, but with only around 2, 500 ST165s and 1, 700 ST185s sold here they are VERY rare and hard to find. Only around 10, 100 ST165s and 26, 000 ST185s were made worldwide, with a variant based on the sixth-generation Celica platform(the ST205) ending the line at about 12, 000 produced. While buried in history the GT-Four was quite successful; taking four WRC drivers championships(1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994). Toyota suspended its rally program after the infamous cheating fiasco in 1995, though they have recently started back up using the Yaris platform.

While the All-trac/GT-Four is a natural choice for rallycross as they're essentially a WRC homologation car the rarity, complexity and difficulty in finding parts makes it an expensive, daunting prospect. The ST185 shares the same second-generation 3SGTE as the MR2 Turbo(and its aftermarket), however the ST165's first-gen 3SGTE is bespoke to it and is nearly impossible to find parts for. Prices can vary; I've seen basketcase project ST165s go for as little as $1, 000 and well-sorted, modified ST185s go for upwards of $10, 000. ST205s will start becoming importable next year(2019), with Canadian-landed JDM imports running around $5, 000 CAD for a runner that needs work. Those prices will likely rise once they start becoming import legal.

That said, if those who run this channel want to check one of these cars out, I've got a sub-50K, stockish ST165 I'm more than willing to break out and show off. Just bear in mind I'm keeping it off the rallycross courses. :)

Why is it that when ford tries they make a beast of a machine but half the time they're like "meh I'll try again around the 10 year anniversary"

Shitty facts man. We got the st165 and st185 alltrac celica's, which were the same thing as the GT-Four celica's. Same 3s-gte and AWD. The Volvo 240 is powered by an inline four, not a v6.

Besides this, good luck finding any Merkur XR4Ti's. In this price point regardless, you can get some beat up WRX's for 4-5k.

The GVR4 and 1G/2G DSM would like to have a talk with you as well.

B23E with the 138hp, was the one to have. With the exhaust kit and a cam alone, it spanked the stock 155hp B21 turbo big time. Volvo had over-the-counter street legal turbo kit for the B23E, to take it much much further.

In sweden there were/are tons of hopup parts. 280-360hp without turbo, more with. Chassis kits, thicker sway bars, bilstein dampers, short ratio steering, body kits, gauge clusters, headers+free flow exhausts, loads of camshafts and engine hopups, limited slips and more, directly from half inch thick volvo R-sport catalogue, all street legal. Now the 242, 2 door body, is the one to have, discountinued in 1983. Lastly, to twist your brains, there was also a street legal 282. Thats right, smallblock chevy conversion kit, WITH street legal documentation, directly from volvo, less engine.

You have never really driven a volvo until you try it fully hopped up with the "R" camshaft. 3500 rpm minimum to get going, 5000rpm reccomended. Then floor it, pull hard to 7000+.

260 was the six cylinders, 240's 4 cylinders. Except obscure canadian diesel6, which was called a 240.

the volvo 240 was never offered with anything but a 4 cylinder called the b20 making about 130hp the volvo 260 however was offered with a strait six and a v6

As I rally cross myself I highly do not recommend sr20s as much as other engines. I use a Nissan pulsar n15 (almera Aussie addition) and it is a 1.6 ga16 engine. As the sr20s have more horsepower the ga16 revs harder. Another reason is that you can abuse the ga16 so much and not hurt anything and it generally lasts longer than the sr20 meaning less part changes meaning less money. You may aswell buy a more expensive car with a better engine than buying a cheap one with a crappy. I highly suggest finding the car in your budget then finding parts for not just the engine but the car itself.

I can vouch for the Golf, I live in Alaska so between the potholes, dirt trails, and foot of snow we're always driving in, it feels like a circuit just going to work 🤣. And I can thoroughly say even when it was stock (Ive since put a larger turbo, tune and coilovers), I've been king of the road. Apart from a psycho who lifted his Porsche, I just cruise around everyone trying to be faster. It's primarily front wheel until the moment your front wheels slip and then the rear wheels kick on. It's so freaking fun. 484 AWHP is a rocket everywhere you go.

Couple of things to note on your video, you claim in the opening about chassis being key to rally, but list the car's by drive type. The choices are good, pretty solid actually, however, it might work better if you listed the cars with special editions ie. The Celica alltrac, which is the us version of the GT four, the Civic wagon awd, the talon/eclipse tsi/gsx, as part of the chassis classification. The one car I disagree on is the mighty max, they're just super rare, so finding one is difficult. I'd say look for a 300zx or early supra also in rwd, or even a fox chassis mustang for the murican folks. One other thing feature less videos of the cars just driving like 30sec max per car. It shortens the video length and helps draw focus to the list and not just to the car videos.

Note on the Celica: USDM got the Alltrac which is the GT Four in Europe and Japan and also badged as the Group A Rallye in Australia.

The 240 usually has an inline 4, but there are v6 versions of it, at least here in Sweden where they originates from.
They are obviosly rather long but very reliable.

El Lada 2104 con modificaciones en su motor y algo de mejoramiento en la suspensión es sin duda la versión más económica para acercarte al Rally.
