These rhomboid trigger points can be troublesome to locate and treat, but there are some simple tips that can help make it easier.

When these muscles shorten, stiffen, and tighten, the shock-absorbent quality is lessened or lost and the neuromuscular integrity of the spine is affected.

NAT offer an online course that is specifically designed for the student of dry needling, or the experienced practitioner who wishes to learn new techniques from one of the world's foremost trigger point and chronic pain specialists.

The trigger point dry needling course is presented by Dr. Jonathan Kuttner who is a leading authority on dry needling / medical acupuncture and is the recipient (2014) of the NAMTPT lifetime achievement award for his contribution to trigger point therapy.

The course material includes; Introduction to Triggers, Finding Triggers, Myofascial Release, Evidence Overview, Taking a Case History, Differential Diagnosis, Needling Safely, Introductory Needling Techniques , Advanced Needling Techniques, Step-by-Step video tutorials for all main muscle groups (over 100 muscles covered in detail across all course material).

There are several useful things he mentions however if you read Travell, et al, it is clearly explained that the rhomboids will not get better unless you work on the patient's "round-shouldered posturing, " i.e., stretch the antagonist muscles (the pec major in this case). Otherwise you might get a few days relief at best but it will keep returning until the trigger points are reduced in the antagonist muscles. Also "Dry Needling" is acupuncture and their are at least 5 studies in the Travell books showing that there is significantly more "post-needling soreness" when needling without procaine or lidocaine is used (and to no one's surprise, advocates of "Dry Needling" supported one study that refutes this). There are about 12 states in the US that allow acupuncturists to do injections and some of them understand the treatment of trigger points. My advice is to find one of them. If they are not available find someone who has actually read the Travell & Simon's books.

First of all, its a clean, sterile needle so you shouldnt touch with your fingers and also you didnt clean the skin surface. This is all wrong from start. And romboids are not like this, you drew them in opposite direction

As a License Acupuncturist for over 20 years initially I did not have a problem with physical therapists doing dry needling. However, after I have seen many cases of physical therapist, puncturing peoples lungs with acupuncture needles I changed my mind. Acupuncturists have over 3500 hours of training in the proper application and use of needles for optimal patient outcomes. Just as I would not want to take 30 or 40 hours of training in cervical spinal manipulation, and start to try billing insurance for it, I would refer to a doctor of chiropractic, who has thousands of hours in training on how to manipulate the spine for optimal, patient outcomes. Physical therapists, therefore should refer to someone who has better training in that area of expertise, rather than trying to be an expert at everything, and use Acupunctue needles when their modalities don't work.

Prime example of the incompetence of practitioners of "dry needling". Please see a licensed acupuncturist for treatment.

Dry needling is people doing acupuncture with 1/100th of the training as an LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST. Think twice before going to a poorly trained clinician.

Horrible clean needle technique. No one should ever been seen by this "doctor"
