Ave verum corpus, natum
de Maria Virgine,
vere passum, immolatum
in cruce pro homine
cujus latus perforatum
fluxit aqua et sanguine:
esto nobis prægustatum
in mortis examine.

~~~
Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
having truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for mankind,
from whose pierced side
water and blood flowed:
Be for us a foretaste [of the Heavenly banquet]
in the trial of death!
I’m seventy six years old. I sang this as a part of a Catholic church boys choir when I was eleven. The very best of all hymns.
This is the voice of God, written through His instrument Mozart, sung with the gifts He had given these young men. Stunning performance.
Anyone in a moment of despair should listen to this and be consoled that there is beauty in this broken world of ours.
So gorgeous. Those little kids don't even sound like little kids. It must be such a huge privilege to sing in this choir.
35myears a go when my daughter was 14 years of age. Her School choir, Harrogate
Ladies College, sang this on Corpus Christi at York Minster. the Girls were behind The Rood and so unseen I. walked in Just as they started to sing these pure young voices as one soaring into the rafters singing this sublimely beautiful hymn. I thought I had died and gone to heaven!
Ave serum corpus was played as I walked behind my husband's coffin in the recessional. It brings back sad and happy memories of over 57 years.
I'm 74 now. I learned to sing this in my teens. I can't tell you how many times I've sung this. I can tell you the blessings I feel and the peace it brings me is incredible.
Music like this is proof of God's existence and W. A. Mozart was but one of His many gifts to us.
I'll be singing this with my choir in February for Confirmation Service, so I came here to keep practicing. I'm Nigerian and the newest member of the choir - in the UK, so I feel a bit awkward with them most of the time😄🙈. I really wanna get all the Latin pronunciations correctly🙏🏽
This is such a beautiful song❤
I adore this piece, Ave Verum Corpus, by one of my heros, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I first heard this work in about 1983 yet when I hear it now, it brings back the Summer term in Sixth form at William Hulme, May through to July 1992. I was suffering from depression and couldn't cope with the demands of French A level. But, as usual, Mozart transported me into a world of upmost beauty and serenity and grace and immense comfort. I think of how young I was in 1992 - I was 17 years of age and my whole life lay ahead. I remember the yearnings and the hot Summer of 1992, the grey blazer I wore each day and the rain that fell in the quad during the last few days of Lower Sixth. Whenever i hear this piece i feel so sweetly sad and yet so entwined in beauty and the longings of those days, thirty years ago.Thank you Mozart.
