Sony ZD9 (Z9D) Review vs 2017 OLED TV

We review the Sony ZD9 (also marketed as the Bravia Z9D in the USA) 4K HDR LED LCD, comparing its picture quality to a 2017 OLED TV.

Aspects compared include black level, viewing angle, colours, motion, 1080p Blu-rays, HDR from 4K Blu-rays mastered to 600 nits, 1000 nits & 4000 nits, as well as games such as Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 Pro.

I walked into the best buy magnolia theater and saw the Z9D in there. I just stood there... I didn't know what I was looking at... I've never seen anything so beautiful. I don't understand how anything can have deeper blacks than that thing. It looked like the screen was off where there wasn't an image on the screen.

That sony is super impressive when you see it in person. I think it has a better picture than any oled i seen and i own a oled tv. Its incredibly bright and has great color

The z9d is spectacular. I just bought the z9d a few days ago. Im coming from owning the kuros and ultimately the panasonic vt60 for many years and never like LCDs... until i saw the z9d.

So according to Vincent, the OLED beats the ZD9 in most but not convincingly. And the Sony ZD9 beats the OLED in HDR performance.
Since HDR is the future, my money is with the Sony ZD9, plus you won't have to deal with the vignetting and burn in issues associated with OLED.

Even on dark images seems like OLED is crushing the black and lack shadow detail in comparison with ZD9. On The Revenant scene for example, the tree is completely missing on OLED.

In a perfect world one would always choose OLEDs but between burn in/image retention in any type of OLED panel ever made be it for phones or tv and between the fact that with time these screens deteriorate and lose brightness and uniformity a person like me that buys a tv every 10 or so years cannot choose something other than LCD which even with its not pixel perfect contrast (which is the only real downside) offer great image quality that lasts in time.

Bought the ZD9 and love it!
Oled is the future, but will wait around 4-5 years before the minor probs (brightness, image retention etc) are resolved and price drops.

Sony Z9D is a beast! Not feeling the slow pixel response, I'm sensitive to pixel trail after owning plasma tv's for a decade. My LG 65C6P OLED is nice and has 3D, but I do wish color gradation was better on all content. No issues watching 4K, but put 720P, or lower (low bit rate 1080P as well) and you see posterizing or contouring color steps.
