10 Places that will pay you to move there. United States

2019 Video:

Kris Antoinette:

This list is an update of sorts on places that will pay you to relocate to. We did this video back in 2019 and thought it was about time to take another look. Some of the cities with programs from the last video aren't running anymore and other places have started trying to lure remote workers to come live and set down roots in their communities.

Here are the links to the programs:

Chatanooga, Tennessee:
Savannah, Georgia:
Tulsa, Oklahoma:
Newton, Iowa
NW Arkansas:
Shoals, Alabama:
Alaska:
Natchez, Mississippi:
Topeka, Kansas:
Harmony, Minnesota:

Remember folks, while incentives are nice, any time there is something offered for free, it is because you are the product! Put another way, look very carefully at what precisely is left out of the brochures for some of these places. Alaska is cold, remote, and expensive; Hawaii is beautiful, the most expensive place to live in the US, and jobs can be an issue if you do not have one, or bring one. Alabama and Mississippi both have more issues (but are literally dirt cheap), Tulsa and Kansas both have tornadoes and that continental weather, Savannah has that sticky maritime climate, and small towns might be a black hole you cannot escape from if you ever lose said techy or online work (or even worse, no decent internet!). Look before you leap.

Two places are worthy. Savanah is gorgeous! Amazing food. The people we met were super nice. Alaska is also a beautiful place, but VERY expensive.

I really enjoy listening/watching your videos about places to live, or not live! I think you do a good enough job describing and listing the pro's and con's of most places. BUT...in this video about paces that will pay you to move there: Newton, IA, I just have to add some more insight to! I have lived in Newton, IA for about 5 years now. At first glance, it is kind of magical looking: Nice parks, community pool, kids riding bikes, or walking unaccompanied by adults everywhere, nice looking vintage downtown square...it's all got a 1950's vibe. This is what I saw and liked about it when I was looking to move my family with 4 kids here. People here are nice enough, like most mid-westerners. But this place has a very SOUTHERN appeal to it, which I found out from some of the locals who welcomed us by driving by our house almost daily for the first year or so with dixie flags strapped to their trucks! My family is interracial. I even had some interesting micro-aggressive questions asked of me from city workers! At least it was micro. Property taxes here are a mystery (why so high for some and low for others with very comparable specs). The elementary school my kids went to (Woodrow Wilson) was like a prison training camp: You must stand outside in the cold weather until precisley 7:30am when they open the doors, there is no talking at lunch time and you can't choose who you sit next to, not even family!!! Mandatory recess time is spent outside no matter the weather! The food served was questionably food at times. I could go on, but I need to address the other issues. The kids you see walking around town all the time are most often latchkey kids, who's parent/s are working or don't care about them (drug addiction) . There is a very unusually high rate of mental illness, and learning disabilities here in Newton, IA. Could it be from all the washed out pesticides from the farm fields that prevail in Iowa? I'm not sure but I wouldn't drink the water from the tap here in Newton, IA (you can taste the chemicals they use to treat it, and that can't be good)! We use a Berkey filter. I really want to leave here as soon as possible! So if there is anybody who likes how this sounds to them, please contact me, I know of a pretty nice house for sale.

I wish there were more options for people who want to take advantage of these programs who aren't in the tech field. I know tech is booming, but there are other jobs, too.

I loved your opening remarks about the guy who worked for the city but didn't know about his own programs. Typical bureaucrat. I know about this, I worked in government for 32 years... :)

I am a native New Yorker who now lives in Tulsa thanks to Tulsa Remote and it's amazing. I honestly, don't plan to leave Tulsa. Applying to Tulsa Remote was the best decision I've ever made.

You missed Hawaii’s program called Movers & Shakas. They don’t pay you to move there but they will pay for your airfare and give you discounted housing along with a bunch of other deals.

Hi I'm a long haul truck driver. I'm wondering did you make a video about a state or city that is truck driver friendly and is relatively cheap to live. Thanks in advance. Give link if you did make a video

One of the problems I am finding when looking at places to relocate is information on internet connectivity. Chattanooga is one of only ones who I have found that actually boast about it.

Some like it hot, some like it cold, some the rain, some the dry, some don't like humidity, some don't mind. As they say you can't please all the people all of the time, some you can please some of the time, others you can't please anytime!
