Thanks for the help, I also tried an alternative which is
1. Locate to the file
2. Click "Get Info"
3. Look for "Where: "
For example mine is Untitled > Users > user1234 > Desktop
4. Select the last word and copy, here which is "Desktop"
5. Paste it into Jupyter notebook
6. Remember to add the file name

i'm using a mac, and when i first clicked my documents folder in the jupyter interface, it asked me to allow access. i accidentally said no, but now the documents folder has disappeared from the jupyter file directory! how do i get it back? this happened with my desktop folder too :(
