Skarsgård's first on-screen acting career began with a Swedish television series in 1968, and he would gain plenty of experience in European cinema before making his American film debut in 1985. I just watched "Goya's Ghosts" (2007), and I would like to nominate this for an honourable mention. Stellan Skarsgård does play the title character (the Spanish master of painting Francisco de Goya) rather well, in my humble opinion.

Pity you didn't include his Swedish movies, particularly INSOMNIA, which was far superior to the pallid American remake with Robin Williams.
