It looks like it works based off of light. The "platter" has five light-sensors on it, and the "read head" is an LED. A new cookie completely covers up the sensors, and when they don't receive any light, it will play the first song. Then, as you take bites, more parts of the cookie will be missing, and thus, more sensors are able to detect the light coming off of the "read head." Ultimately, if all five sensors see light, the music won't play.

EDIT: There may even be a 6th sensor right in the middle, now that I watch it again.

I was thinking each cookie was gonna have it's own song. But it looks like it's just going based off light sensors. A bit disappointing but what are you gonna do
