In this video Batch operating system is discussed with real life examples which is important for College/University students as well as Competitive exams also.

So here in types of operating system, first comes the batch operating system, then multi program, multi-tasking, real time, distributed, clustered & embedded system. Batch operating system, as
the name tells that batch of job. Means we are making a batch of similar kind of job and giving to the computer so it can execute it. This is the main funda we have, now the scenario here is when we used to use these systems at the time of 1960s at that time if someone wants to get his work executed.

Batch Operating System: It works by creating batch of similar kind of jobs. In this approach if we give a process to the CPU then while executing one process if that process asks for IO or any other operation that takes some time, for that interval of time CPU b becomes idle which is not a good way to use our resources of CPU. It was generally used in old generations of computers (in 1960s). We give our jobs to the operator. IBM introduced FORTRAN IBSYS 7096 for this.

Advantages :-


1. Same jobs in the batch are executed at higher speed.
2. A process is complete its execution, next job from job spool get executed without any user
interaction.
3. CPU utilization gets improved.
4. To speed up the processing speed, the batch process can partition into the number of processes.

Disadvantages :-

1. Difficult to debug.
2. If a job gets to enter in an infinite loop, other jobs wait for unknown time.
3. Batch systems are costly.
