Reproduction: Crash Course Zoology #9

Today we're (finally) going to talk about animal babies! But more than just puppies and piglets we're going to be looking at their genes. Sexual reproduction is part of the very definition of what it means to be an animal and as you'll see life has found a variety of methods to pass down genetic information. We'll also discuss the differences between sex and gender, take a closer look at sex determination systems, examine how same-sex behavior happens all across the animal kingdom, and live a day-in-the-life of the serially hermaphroditic clownfish!

As a spider scientist (and the science consultant for CCZoo), I love these wonderful animals, but I realize that being startled by a spider can be scary (even if you like them!). An important part of overcoming arachnophobia is building positive interactions with arachnids on /your/ terms, so hopefully this helps some of y'all do so and enjoy the videos.

Thank you for including a discussion of same-sex sexual activity in animals! I know that a lot of teachers play this in their classrooms, and that's an aspect of our evolutionary history that is never discussed in the educational system for fear of it being "controversial."

Another interesting species is the Sonoran whiptail, which are all genetically identical females. Even though they just clone themselves, though, they need to engage in mating-like behaviors with other Sonoran whiptails to stimulate the production of the clones.

Concerns for sea turtles and global warming is influencing reproductive cycles since temperature determines which gender the eggs become.
