Why Syril and Mosk Switched Hats in the Andor Season Finale

Why did Syril and Mosk swap hats in the Andor finale? I don’t know exactly why, but I think that moment was simply meant to show some level of camaraderie between the two characters. Mosk specifically seems tuned into Syril. As they reach Rix road, he keeps holding his former superior officer back from danger. I think Mosk genuinely views him as a friend and cares for him. But then as the riot explodes and Syril rushes off to protect Dedra, Mosk is left alone. We don’t know what happens to Karn, but he never comes back for his friend. Mosk is last seen drinking in the street by himself, and I think that’s meant to be contrasted back to how the two started the episode together. But Syril doesn’t value Mosk. He’s farther down the chain of command. He values Dedra far more because, yes I think he likes her and is being a creep about it, but I also think he sees her as a potential step up in the world.

They switch hats so they can find each other in the crowd, if they get separated.

It’s a common strategy in spy craft to switch hats with someone you need to stay with. It’s hard to recognize your friend in a crowd of people, but you’ll recognize your own hat

I think Mosk was depressed and drinking at the end because he finally saw the Empire for what it was after the massacre of innocents.

I love that there is at least ONE post Disney star wars product that you can actually analyse and make theories based on the cinematography rather than doing so to try and fill plot holes.

The cap colours are what’s important. Cyril’s cap has an orange peak which means he’s the officer while mosks is blue. If you go back to episode 3 the pre mora uniforms have the same colour designs to denote rank.

I really liked Mosk. he was just a guy doing his job, knows nothing of how evil the empire is, had this job before the empire...poor guy I felt bad for him

I think it is equally important that Mosk does not have a hat when he drinks alone in the street. He feels abandoned and that may have further repercussions. He has strong need of being part of something bigger. Since the empire rejected him, he may turn to the rebels should he run into Andor or Syril again in season 2.

I personally think Mosk switched hats with Syril to help him blend in with the locals better. And to help humanize both characters by giving them some camaraderie, the show likes to point out these are all normal people living in extraordinary times. These are my reasonings at least. I have also read from others that it may symbolize that Syril and Mosk switching roles.

Syril cared what he looked like. He altered his uniforms and his clothes. He was holding his hat in his lap because he didn’t want to wear it, Mosk saw this, and offered to trade hats.

Mosk maybe signs of PTSD drinking even in a firefight. It’s something that was common back in WW1- Korea to calm their nerves in the stress or bringing back flashbacks in their service. We don’t know how ruthless this Corp was too. He’s been abandoned by his brother in arms and Syril chose the imperial ISB he barely knew or worked with over his own friend trying to protect him. The most passionate fighters are ones who have nothing else to lose, no job, no friends, literally saw the burial service for the mother of the guy they were going to arrest and saw how the Empire used Brute force to subjugate the population. All it takes is one man to change the world : makerov mw3.

This is what makes this show better than any other star wars show since the last season of clone wars. The use of real intelligence to work together not just a bunch of people doing nothing against another bunch of people

The little moment on the bus and Mosk just sitting alone at the finale have a strange, relatable vibe to them. It’s so reminiscent of city scenes in movies, with the characters just trying to get by in an empty, strange world, like in Taxi Driver, whether it be resting on a bus or reminiscing on the streets.

"Why? I don't know." Thanks!

Wouldn’t be surprised if Mosk tries to join the rebellion despite Syril

My interpretation was that they had messages in their hats and that is was a comedic scene, because they both take/took their jobs way too serious and now they both think they are on a top secret mission and can’t even talk on a bus, even though nobody cares about them.
The long cringy silence also felt very intentional by the creators to underline that and was funny

One thing to consider is that Mosk and Syril were present during Maarva’s speech and took out of it different things, Mosk may have been drinking to quell the pain of realizing he was fighting for the bad guys all along

There are a few instances of Syril mentioning that his clothes are tailored. He always wears form fitting clothes. I took this scene to be that Mosk noticed Syril's hat was bothering him because it didn't fit properly and that his was smaller, so he traded.

In Ep3 we see that the senior officers have an orange brim on their hat. In Ep12 Mosk gives Syril his orange hat as he's the senior officer.

Poor Sergeant Blueberry. I hope we see him in season 2. In fact, I’d love an entire spinoff show about him.
