How to Draw an Ellipse

I guess the thing that some people may be turned off by are all of the measuring, lines and dots that he's using as guides. I remember when I was first introduced to these tecniques I was sort of overwhelmed by them too as I was used to relying on my own eye and freehand drawing. Having said that, I think people will find these tecniques, if given a chance-even if it's just to give an artist another way of looking at what they're doing so their execution will be more acurate, will be valuable tools to make your drawing better.

Very helpful! I like the idea of using a square in perspective to find out how the elipse would look.

By the way, I think the 2 point perspective drawing you did seems to be more in 3 point perspective. But its still very helpful

wow that was very helpful.  I was going crazy trying to draw a proper ellipse and circle.  this makes things waaay easier.  And good to see that many artists, can just draw it perfectly with one swoop either.  I literally tore out all the pages in a sketch book trying to draw perfect circles and ellipses freehand.  Was driving my crazy.

Would be helpful to discuss the foreshortening that you show. That is the 'middle' line is not placed in the mathematical center of the box. Your drawings show this correctly but you don't explain how the correct middle point is identified

Helpful video, thanks. However, can you advise on how to determine or simulate the appropriate "height" from where we look at the ellipse? I can draw an ellipse without any problems but I find it difficult to make the perspectives look "real" because it is too "open" or too "closed". Not sure that makes sense, but it's also linked to the height of the background line and the vanishing point. I.e, sometimes the drawing is right but the perspective is wrong because if you look at the cup in reality, it doesn't match with the drawing. If you understand what I mean by this, do you have any advice?

how does one draw a perfect ellipse by means of tools?
i dont wanna stick pins in my paper and whip out a loop of string everytime because that's slow.
is there a tool i can get?

I have cup on a table. Do I just make up the VP and ignore what I see? What if the made up VP does not match at all how much of the top of the cup I see? Won't it all be off kilter from that? I have looked at many paintings, videos, and articles on the web. I see tons of cups (etc.) that look like someone has melted the upper portion of the cup and it is falling forward towards the viewer. That cannot be correct when you look at it and it definitely and it immediately says to a viewer ---- something is wrong with the perspective... So back to the question. What do you do when you have an actual object in front of you and are not just making up an object from your imagination?

The ellipse you draw with 2pt perspective should have a horizontal long axis :/
