Comping: Tritone Dominants and Chromatic Chords

The two most important elements of comping are rhythm and harmony. With the two working together, you can create a very comfortable setting for soloists and vocalists. And, if you can do that, you will certainly find your phone ringing more often and get more gigs.

In order to create a harmonic direction as a pianist, it’s a good idea to add some harmonic flavor to the given harmony (what you see on the lead sheet). Approaching a chord from half a step above with a Tritone Dominant or a Chromatic chord is a great harmonic tool to explore.
