Reading is Fundamental: Book People Unite

Today Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children's literacy nonprofit in the country, is launching "Book People Unite," a bold awareness campaign to focus a spotlight on children's literacy nationwide. The campaign, anchored by a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) with beloved book characters and a star-studded soundtrack, aims to spark a movement to put books in the hands of children who need them most. The PSA is a collaboration among RIF, the Library of Congress and the Ad Council and was created by Mother New York.

I remember the Summer of 2012 so vividly. I was homeless, living in a tent with my mother and sister, and had just graduated high school. We'd spend hours at the laundromat and they'd show this commercial and other AdCouncil commercials repeatedly. I've been looking for this commercial for years!! It was one bright spot during a rough time.

It’s May 2025 but I used to sing this song to my daughter when I was pregnant with her (10 yrs ago) and I still sing it to her and now I also sing it to my newborn son. The best commercial I have ever seen.

I walked into my public library yesterday and children were sitting at tables and upon squashed bean bag chairs reading books with a big smile on their faces.
That was truly a beautiful sight to behold.
