How to repair and reset a Dewalt planer DCP580 motor and blade holder problem.

There actually is very little to these Dewalt planer, once you take the body and motor unit out. There isn't much else there.

They are a nice little planer and are powerful, but they are also basic and don't plan to 0mm.
They always seem to plan something matter mow low you set them.

As with any planer, nails and screws cam play havoc with them. When they hit something hars enough they tend to do damage to the set plates or the clamps, as well as the blades.

resetting the holders and changing the set plates is quite simple to do. But do watch out if debree getting inside the motor unit.

Thank you so much for your video, Dean! I had the same issue with my 580...would only click when I hit the trigger. Thought that I'd have to send it back to DeWalt for repairs. But, luckily, I found your video last night, followed your steps and now it is running like new again. Sure enough, I had a bunch of metal shards in the motor and they just needed to be cleaned out. Next time, when planing older wood, I'll check it more thoroughly for hidden nails. 🤓

I like my dewalt tools alot out of over 20 I've only had 3 stop working still under warranty. I like your videos because if I need to fix a tool I now have a better idea how.

Great video as always. I'll stick with my pre-WWII Stanley-Baileys Nos. #2-8 working collection for planing "manually".

I jammed a plastic bag around the blades and had to do this. Thanks.

Hi Dean
Could you do a Vid on zeroing and setting the blade. Dewalt don't seem to think people should know how this is done.

Dean is there any chance you can let us know what each repair cost out of interest. Been throwing out these tools for years because when I send them in local for repair it's takes 6 or more months to get them back.am hooked on watching these vids and have learnt so much about the quality of some tools.

So the blade casting was liberated from a Makita that's been around 40 years. So I assume the planer will work with the original massive blades that don't break .and those blades are more available available

Do you sell any to a cheap retired military guy in the USA? I like to repair and reuse my tools, but finding used ones are difficult.

You can go buy another one and switch out the guts on it if the controller is bad and put the bad one in the new one then take it back and it doesn't cost anything but gas and time don't ask me how I know .

dewalt manuals are useless -thanks for this

They don't make them like they used to. Built to "buy another one".

I'm not liking the blade setup on that, a screwdriver isn't my preference for tightening something that is subject to those kind of forces.

And its still junk. I noticed you use a Makita drill and not a Dewalt
