Both phones have made compromises in the camera departments which is hugely disappointing to me.
Xiaomi including the 2x telephoto (down from a 8mp 5x periscope) is STUPID because when you have a high 50mp main sensor cropping to 2x digital is just as good, and it will probably use the main sensor for zoom at night anyway!
OnePlus have downgraded the flagship Sony 776 ultra wide sensor used in the 9 pro to a budget Samsung JN1 sensor. This is a massive downgrade in my eyes and not enough reviewers are calling it out.

I think both have made these subtle changes to hopefully push more people to buy their ultra variants? (OnePlus is rumoured to be releasing a ultra or pro plus this year)

Rant justified! Oneplus has really settled so much... Still rocking the Oneplus 7... Sad to see Oxygen OS being replaced by Color OS, there's nothing quite like it... With regards to the gen1, hope they could come up with an update that could rival the 870

Thanks man for the honest review. So tired of all this affiliated youtubers and supertechnerds. We just need good and working phones and day to day performance, not numbers in benchmarks or on the spec cheet.

Thank you for a great comparison, and articulate, intelligent honesty. We don't see much of that these days! 👍🏻

Thanks Chris for your honesty, I have the Mi 11 and find it a great phone and won't be upgrading for at least 2 to 3 years. I do agree with you the brand's are established but that's no excuse for trying the Apple thinking of fleecing their fan base.

My first experience with Xiaomi was the Redmi Note 2 Prime but due to the lack of LTE band 20 got HTC one M7 then LG V20, moved back to Xiaomi with Poco F1, Poco F2. Both great phones.

That's why i love your reviews and I can always count on them. I am following many tech channels but yours is the most consistent... I love that you go through mostly everything essential thoroughly for all the items you review and compare and also that you point out both the good and the bad, whether they are important for me or not, it's good that I and everyone else that might care about any of these mentions gets to know about all the aspects or possible concerning aspects.

I liked the verdict part very much, it's as real as it gets. Keep it up Chris!

I share the same opinion about sd 8 gen 1, they missed the target by a mile with that one. Noone wants to hold a hot mess on a sunny day when that screen lights up

Super review. Like it when you are on the consumer side. Oh, I think the Covid and overheating 888 have something to do with the "lost generations."
I just got OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition for 309 USD (Amazon). It is sub-branded with T-Mobile but is unlocked. I consider this model to be the archetype of all smart phones. Even now it has Android 11 along with 500+ ppi resolution, curved display, stereo speakers, 90 Hz refresh, OIS on 48Mpix Main cam as well as OIS on telephoto with 3x optical zoom, EIS on front and selfie cams, pop up selfie, and USB Type-C 3.1. It has but one 5G channel. A historical gem that today runs and looks with the best.

Xiaomi needs to revamp MIUI from the ground or just stay in AOSP, MIUI is literally the only reason i will never buy a Xiaomi device again. Most of their phones look amazing on paper but the bugs, the bloatware, the ads destroy the experience.

Just imagine the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5g with pure android... like a Xiaomi Mi A4... a Dream.

Edit: I still dont get how the FUCK Xiaomi let this phone make it to the stores when it cant even SCROLL properly.

two and a half years & no company convinced me to upgrade my phone yet...my Samsung note 10 plus is still running great with 801 single core and 2300 multicore (android 12), 45watt charging, versatile cameras that still hold there own.

These 2 phones feel like they've been rushed. Some things look like they're unfinished, especially in the camera department. We're talking about flagships but looks at some pictures, it doesn't seem to

Looks like the Mediatek Dimensity flagships might be the hope for some change now. I guess we'll see. Appreciate the honest review

Its sad to see xiaomi went down so fast, I've been a xiaomi fan boy 2 years ago but man their devices became so buggy I just couldn't recommend them anymore, it seem like they lost their touch, thankfully samsung took the crown with updates & One UI

The trend of having a new gen phones every year results in manufacturers having to rush the models instead of taking time to properly develop and optimise for the new chips which as well are rushed to deliver a new model and we have this overheating and stuttering devices and this years looks like one of the most rushed and unoptimized, its a shame. Well done calling things as they are

I for one, appreciated the rant.☺️. I am hearing the reason why the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is overheating is because they are being fabricated by Samsung and not TSMC.

Xiaomi should start creating a new skin which is more lightweight and close to stock (like Oxygen OS before). My Mi 10T (MIUI 12.5) vs OP8T (IOS 11) both have SD865 but the UI feels lighter with OP8T. So I decided to change my Mi 10T ROM from MIUI to PPUI 12 then the user experience became on par with OP8T.

Sterling work as always mate. Really surprised with the Xiaomi and it's stutters (appreciate this can be resolved with updates).

Appreciate the work you put into this, great job 👏👏

Android 12 just seems to be slower on most phones, at least from what I've seen. Google needs to do another Project Butter.
Edit: The stuttering OS combined with the Snapdragon 810... I mean 8 Gen 1, makes 2022 a year to hold on to your old phones. I'm telling everybody I know not to upgrade this year.

*Honest review as always.* Thank you, Chris! I hope Xiaomi sees this review, as well as some other honest reviews, and understands that not everything is a good spec sheet. This phone is a BIG drop compared to the Mi 10 pro. It is true that I was a big fan of Xiaomi, but this is no longer tolerated. It is better to pay a little more, but take a much more reliable phone that will have longer support, namely - Samsung. These Chinese manufacturers are raising their prices as opposed to quality. Oneplus is also an example of this
