Gotta talk about these art rules.
Hope you guys find this helpful! At the end of the day we are all here to learn, every artist is forever learning.

I hope this video helps you if you're looking for a way to draw side profiles for your characters. Too many art tutorial videos nowadays present only one right way to do things, and that's simply not true. There are exceptions to every art "rule." We need to start treating them as learning guides instead of absolute laws to live by.

Props to Sam for not ignoring the issue, but instead adressing the heart of it without getting caught up in the dramatics.

I love that Sam focuses on teaching us art babies how to fix the issue rather then just talking about the problem

As a reminder that specific facial feature of the lips bypassing the line from nose tip to chin isn't soley a feature of black races, so feel free to put it on pretty much any character if you want them to have that face shape.

Im so glad that people of the art community are REALIZING that art tutorials should just be a BASIC understanding not a requirement. We are growing and its good.

As a mixed race person, I think what a lot of artists have to accept is that all sorts of people look all sorts of ways, and that all these rules are gonna not apply to someone. And even if you try to apply different rules to different types of people, you’re going to find people in that group who also break those rules and look different from how typing that group would suggest they “should” look.

I think, in art, we have to stop drawing what we think people should look like, and start drawing what people look like to us on a case by case basis.

i love how everyone is now starting to realize how ridiculous some of these “art tips” are.

I’m glad Sam didn’t become apart of the drama. He is always so calm. ✌️

I love that you and Ethan take the moment of this controversy to foucus on _constructive_ ways on how to draw different head shapes, instead of joining in on the _drama_

This is why references are important. It's easy to get caught up in the little tips and tricks and forget to just look at real life

I draw like over 1000 people every year as a live caricature artist. Face shapes are all over the place and aren’t really tied to any race or ethnicity. There are so many exceptions I see to these guidelines. Have fun and play with facial shape possibilities!

0% drama. 100% learning. That's what art is all about! Thank you, Sam, for sharing your knowledge!

The issue is people forget that face shapes differ as much as bodies.. the race isn't always part of it too! people are simply shaped differently :)
nothing is wrong with how anyone looks like, you are great the way you are
we are supposed to look (even if so lightly) different

In summary, for what Sam didn’t outright say: “do this not that” or “never do this” art tips SUCK. They are not the final ending to your art journey and they should never be treated that way.

As a rule, if I see a thumbnail be like "don't do this, do this" or "bad, ok", "no, yes" and such, I completely ignore it.

It's great that instead of bullying and insulting the artist who caused the drama with her words Sam chose to make it into educational video. I saw people starting to insult her and calling her art ugly and boring and how it has anything to do? Is it really a right response to the situation? I doubt that, so it's great to see that people like Sam exist in the art community

as an artist, art tips that said “do this” or “don’t do that” really held me back for a long time. finding amazing creators like sam is such a great thing that’s happened to me and my art and I appreciate it, love you sam

My mind is absolutely blown at the fact that a tiny detail can change SO MUCH in a character!

I LOVE WHEN ARTISTS ADDRESS "rules" that are really just tropes or usages of measurement to help an individuals process. Great usage of your guests' content.
