I'm started to learn Freecad and I know that it should not compare to any paid licensed cad software. Funding is always problem in software like Gimp and Freecad. People who use these software should donate back something to them if they are using regularly and get income. This way we get more proper and good free software in future.

Is there any question about who is better. Now in fall of 2023 it is still far! But FreeCAD is getting better and better...give it another decade and we will see!

Autocad made me lazy and stupid. I tried to learn solidworks and I did some interesting things with it, but I gave up. Freecad is impressive and I am trying to learn it. I hate solidworks because I can't create machines using it< I know how to do it on autocad, but I don't nkow gow when using solidworks (all solidworks tutorials I saw are from people showing how to enter a 2d design on solidworks to create a part, I did not see even a single tutorial showing how to sketch a few parts on a single design to create parts later). To be more specific (since my english is poor) I have an example: to create a single shot pistol lockwork with trigger, trigger bar, sear and hammer and their springs and spring guides.

Totally going over the fact a SolidWorks license costs 22-26 grand.

Solidworks now hides its Sub D modeller in the cloud. I dont like it for that.

Highly depends on how rich you are. Since Freecad is free.

Freecad seems to not be very easy to work with but i think if you can get past the rough edges, open source CAD software is extremely powerful. I always found software like solidworks left a lot to be desired in terms of function based modelling, and it was difficult to implement more complicated algorithms

Very detailed and comprehensive video, it's easy to make a decision after watching.
I'm going for FreeCad for obvious reasons.

I have used Autodesk Inventor and solidworks before during university. I prefer Autodesk Inventor.
However, when I graduated, I didn’t have the funding and do not want to pay the subscription fees for both of them. Therefore, I eventually go for FreeCad and found that is fantastic. Even though not comparable to the Inventor to some extent but it gets the job done.
I am thinking of OpenSCAD in addition to that as it may give me more flexibility to create and manipulate the object and the text-based CAD can save my hand from mouse to keyboard.

SolidWorks are extremely shy when it comes to talking about it's cost.

I have been working with CAD software as a professional for over 30 years. I have used many of the commercial products available. I can tell you that Solidworks is obsolete garbage. The drafting side of it has always been, and still is, terrible. It only functions with simple drawings. Any reasonably complex assembly and it goes turns to crap. The software is not multithreaded. Which means it only runs on a single core. My computer has 16 cores, so SW is only utilizing 1/16 of it's power. As such, it is still as slow as it was 20 years ago. Any company that is paying for it is getting seriously ripped off.

How FreeCAD handles very large assemblies?

Which one is better? Obviously solidworks,
By far.

Which one makes more sense ? freeCAD by a long shot ;p unless you're an engineer at a company 4, 500$ a year isn't worth it
