Manticore has now released on the Nintendo Switch after being delayed for nearly a month. This game comes from a cell phone series of dog fighting space action games where you fly around fighting other ships in space. With the promise of removed micro transactions and 60FPS gameplay on the Switch, lets see how this game plays.

I watch your content everyday, you have an amazing unique style that makes your videos professional but still fun to watch.

Galaxy on Fire 2 was, in my opinion, the best mobile game ever made. GoF 3: Mantacore was a huge let down.

I miss these old Let's Plays, Jon/Evan. I share a lot of taste in games with Jon so I like finding his opinion on old games that are now on sale.

I saw this game ages ago and wondered where it had gone. Doesnt bother me if its from a mobile game...iam loving these cheap good games.

It's actually Galaxy on Fire: Manticore. The franchise has been around for quite a while.

I don´t know if this one actually holds up to the original, i remember playing it way before the android/ios era. The first one had a mining system, crafting, management (you had a few different ways of making money; like hunting down specific enemies, buying guns, materials and reselling them on different stations), there were factions (you had the choice of being an ally or an enemy). It was pretty much an open world game where you could choose to complete the main story missions or side quests of course, letting you travel to different stations and completing whatever mission you wanted at any time, there were many ships and upgrades to buy, and they actually made an impact on the gameplay. It was way ahead of its time to the point where with this one just feels like they´re going back in terms of depth and mechanics. For what i´ve seen the second one was also really good, although i didn´t play much of it.

In GOF 2, you felt a lot less restricted, and the galaxy felt much more alive then manticore. GOF2 was open world, with random events at every station. You also had so much more choice in outfitting, once you earned enough credits to purchase what you want. Your rewards for missions also scaled up appropriately as you increased your reputation, so it did not feel like a grind.
Unfortunately, I think that is because microtransactions were an afterthought, heck they were only added years after the game came out.
Manticore feels like its was intended for microtransactions from the beginning, with the removal of the Open world nature baffling me, as I thought the feedback was clear that it was a good thing. Also the method of obtaining ships, felt like they were never achievable.. if I didn't pay.
I would much rather have seen a worthy successor of GOF 2 on the Switch.
I wonder if Fishlabs sees it that way also, since Manticore is not called GOF 3.
However, GOF 2 HD is still available for free on mobile, If you are looking for a space game, and Manticore left you disappointed either on mobile or Switch, give its older brother a shot.

This game looks like it runs off the same engine used for my favorite Switch indie title, Implosion. And the game looks fairly fun, too. I may end up picking it up.

As a GOF fan that was also hugely disappointed when GOF3: Manticore (mobile) was released under the direction of Deep Silver FISHLABS, I will happily pass on Manticore: Galaxy on Fire (Nintendo Switch) and wait for Everspace. Everspace, which is a PC game, was made by the original development team (now under the name ROCKFISH Games) behind GOF1 and GOF2...and I can almost guarantee that it'll be a blast on the Nintendo Switch! :)

Reminds me of Halo: Reach's SABRE mission.

Thanks so much. I’m really into these kind of games and was interested in this one!
EDIT: Is there an online mode? Seems like a game that could do a lot with one.

Definitely gives me vertigo... I like the free roam flying aspect though. I thought it was more like a star fox-rails style... this is good news that its not. (I love Star Fox though)

kinda reminds me of the dogfights in Ratchet and Clank 2.

The game used to be ridiculously long due to the number of missions you could do, which is a plus for me, but I don't know how long this one is, and I don't spend on anything that won't last for a while.
