Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy | Gillette Children's

“In infants who are developing typically, we often see symmetric use of the arms and the legs,” says Marcie Ward, MD, a pediatric rehabilitation medicine physician at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. “That’s what we would typically expect to see. In a child who may be exhibiting signs or symptoms of cerebral palsy, may show us asymmetry in their arm movements, in their hand movements, or in their leg movements.”

Cerebral palsy symptoms in babies might include: stiff limbs or low muscle tone; inability to use one side of the body; or asymmetry (when one side of the body moves differently than the other side).
As a child grows, he or she might show additional symptoms of cerebral palsy such as: inability to hold up her head on her own; inability to sit on his own; difficulty holding and using objects; clumsiness and frequent falling; losing previously acquired skills; or toe walking.

Tim Feyma, MD, is a pediatric neurologist at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare. It’s important to see a team for the diagnosis of CP because lots of things can look like CP but aren’t CP,” says Feyma. “It’s very important to make sure that we’ve settled what the diagnosis is.”

“There are many reasons for children to exhibit delays in their development,” says Ward. “It’s important for them to get in with their primary care provider, to have those motor delays investigated. And if the primary care provider feels that it’s appropriate, then to refer to a center that can take a really good look at their child and give them some advice on how to move forward.”

“The most common concern we hear in the Motor Delay Clinic is parents realize that there is something that’s not right,” says Feyma. “They need to make sense of that so we can begin to help the child. At the end of the day, talk about diagnosis, at the end of the day parents just want to know what’s next and where do we go from here.”

So glad you are doing so great, we got the news today that one of our twin grandsons, they suspect has CP. Though it may be mild, he was born premature but was 2 lbs. smaller than his brother who was 7.5 lbs, Lincoln was 5.5. He was very tiny. He sits well, uses his hands well, he crawled late so it is possible since he was so small that he may have been conceived up to a month or two later than Grant, the bigger twin so they are not identical. He is cruising around furniture and walks with support at his hips. The doctors think he may need hip surgery. He does have low muscle tone. He has eye glasses and has not begun to talk. So there are definitely some delays.

Your comment was very uplifting. I’m glad you are doing so well.

Physical and occupational therapy helps. It helps a lot. Now, I can finally walk and does not need a walker anymore.

I did not walk till after I was 2 or walk without help until I was almost 3 i never crawled I used my arms to get around i am 53 now and I have never been diagnosed with it back in 1969 things were very different . my body has taken a toll I have had chronic pain sense 28 years old. Funny thing is I have never been able to brush my hair with my left hand until about 3 years ago. I have a strong feeling I was misdiagnosed from the beginning . I was a breach birth and lack of oxygen to the brain at birth .

One of my nieces was diagnosed with CP and we lost her when she was 2 and half and now my nephew (her younger brother) shows the same symptoms
He is 8 months now and can’t even hold up his head on his own
Although his all genetic and other tests show no evidence of any disability but he shows the same symptoms as of her sisters
Mainly of blindness- he also cannot see
