I wish the first black Disney princess was a little more interesting.

TERMS OF CALLING THE VOICEMAIL:
By calling or texting this number, you agree to allow me to record your voicemail and use the recordings and texts for personal and commercial use. I agree, however, not to give or sell any of your information to any parties unafilliated with video production on this channel.
1. No one will ever answer this number, it should always go straight to voicemail, so don't expect to talk to a human.
2. It is very, very, unlikely that anyone will call or text you back. If you get a response, it will be in a public way, such as when part of a video.
3. There's a caller ID, so I will generally be able to see the number you called from. As mentioned above, none of this information will be shared or used, but if that makes you uncomfortable then I suggest not calling. I also suggest that you do not share any unecessary personal information.
4. Your basic rates and charges for calls, whatever they may be, will still apply.
5. Your voicemail might be used for or responded to in a future video!

Fun fact: I attended a panel centreing Black writers, directors etc in animation, and one of the speakers was Peter Ramsey (Director of Spiderverse, my Twitter mutual, etc). This was around the time Soul and Spy In Disguise had already come out, so the Black Lead Turned Into Animal joke was getting quite the bodycount. During the talk, Peter Ramsey said, very nonchalantly, "you know in one of the earlier drafts, Miles was going to turn into a spider for a significant part of the movie!" and everyone was like "What seriously????"

And he laughed and said "Fuck no!"

It was great. He's great, love the guy.

I actually consider Facilier to be the main character. The whole thing is a cautionary tale to not f*ck with Voodoo.

If Disney was being honest, they wouldn't be selling Tiana dolls in a dress, but in a frog costume
Then again, they do the same thing with Mulan. Since when have they sold Mulan in her soldier outfit? I would have bought the sh out of that as a kid.

I'm finally vindicated in my unabashed love for Doctor Facilier. Happy to hear he's beloved by others who wacthed this movie too. Also, as an animator, his dance sequence is amazingly well-done.

It is funny because I have found A LOT of white millennials who love Tiana. I am hoping the "Tiana" show will give her so much more character, cause shes too cute to be slept on.

It drives me crazy that they decided to make her a workaholic without adressing the class and race factors that put her in this position. It's implied that her being poor and black are obstacles to get her dream business, and yet they decided to just blame it on her working too much.
And get that they're cowards, but like why give her an arc that ties it back to the thing they're so afraid to address?

It baffles me that Disney didn't just come up with a fantasy world/kingdom for Tiana (or another black princess character), like they've done with so many of their white princesses. Then they wouldn't have had to try to balance the realism of the 1920s with not making the one black princess movie deal heavily with racism. To be fair, I agree that racism shouldn't be prominent in the film, because kids watch Disney movies to escape into fantasy, and black kids shouldn't be denied that.
It wouldn't fix the lousy characterization and lack of plot. But it would remedy the awkward moments of editing history and almost-nearly-sort-of mentioning racism.

As a huge fan of this movie I loved your critiques, they got me thinking about different choices that could’ve been made. Imagine if tiana had agreed to go along with naveen as a human to help and we had bigger tension when they’re already falling in love and she finds out he lied. Maybe we could get some background showing facilier had killed her father after he himself, worn down, tried to find a short cut. Still struggling on an arc for tiana though. The animation and music in this was amazing and I always found tiana to be one of the most likeable princesses maybe because she’s the most real and relatable?

When my mum started this film, she thought she caught the plot twist early: hardworking Tiana, remembering her father, would not fall in love with the foppish prince, who is pretty contrary to all her values, and in a twist ending fall in love with a regular man who shares her values and they would mutually support each other.
Nope.

Anika Noni Rose is such a good singer that it baffles me they didn't write more for her in this movie.

I hate how Tiana's lesson from Mama Odie is "to be happy with what you got." Other princesses are told to dream big, like Moana sings that she'll go farther than before, basically the opposite of what Tiana was told

Speaking of how cool Dr. Facilier was the fact he never got Tumblr Sexy Man status like other bean pole bad men always felt...telling. The site that literally fell for a skeleton somehow conveniently missed the smooth talking mysterious Black slender man and keeps doing it? *_That’s weird_* 👀

isn't it nice that we can all finally come together and talk about how this movie is bad

They do it to their indigenous American leads too. See Cuzco turning into a llama in Emperor's New Groove and Kenai turning into a bear in Brother Bear

T1J: "Whenever Disney makes a movie about black people, they don't get be human."

I snickered at that because I love when people call out Disney's hypocrisy.

I think representation is vital (because growing up with nobody that looks like you or is like you makes you feel isolated and alone), but there's nothing wrong with wanting more than that. Yeah, Tiana is the first black princess but what's wrong with asking for more to add to the story?

These stories are more than just hobbies. They are what kids watch and learn from, so it's important that they get more than just one movie with one black princess. And all the points you made in this video I feel are very spot on.

I actually think this is a fantastic movie. I think it's one of the best Disney movies of all time. When I was watching it, I got invested in the characters, and every time I fall in love with them all over again. I think they're chemistry is great. The only problem that I always felt was that they are frogs entirely too long! I would have no problem with all of the frogness, if there was some other type of black princess is or if there had been a part two where she's fully human the whole time.

The princess and the frog seems like two movies. One was a black woman trying to make her own way in life, and own her own restaurant. The other was when she was turned into a frog. I think it could be a beautiful story if they just kept the first plot.

"Obscure Black Man" is the perfect title for Naveen. You made me laugh when you asked "you think Disney gonna give us the first Black princess AND the first Black prince?" lol. These companies really act like they "spoil" us when they decide to make Any character of Brown complexion...
Disney knew what they were doing by making our "Black Disney Princess" a frog for most of the movie and making the "Black struggle" a big part of it. People pretend like Black kings and queens can't and/or have never existed... Which is just pure stupidity and ignorance.
This movie failed to live up to its potential because they didn't want to give us too much "Black fantasy", but in some parts they also didn't want to give us too much "Black reality".
