Tawaif is not equal to prostitution..can you call bollywood actress as prostitutes. They were artist just like modern day actress. Tawaif were celebrities of their times. They were groomed since childhood into highly educated in fine arts and very powerful. Gangubai is movie of sex worker. Tawaifs were not sex worker.

They were given freedom from household chores and husband duties but were still respected in society. They were called Nagarwadhu. Ancient Indian texts are full of them.
