You are talking about the era of British but around 2000 years ago in India they were respected and acted as diplomats and spies. They were good artists. They also sometimes got married and were respected and accepted by the society and were not discriminated against. There is an ancient play called mrichakatika whose main character is a ganika. 🙂

Tawaif is not equal to prostitution..can you call bollywood actress as prostitutes. They were artist just like modern day actress. Tawaif were celebrities of their times. They were groomed since childhood into highly educated in fine arts and very powerful. Gangubai is movie of sex worker. Tawaifs were not sex worker.

आज़ादी के लिए तवायफ़ भी कुर्बान हो गयी, हमने मशालों पर घुंघरू बँधे देखे है.

It’s so amazing that at that time These women who were not considered as shareef aurtein were so honest to their nation and they were so dedicated to their art .Society jisko bura kehti hai woh asal mein bura nahi hota usko halaat bana detey hain .

First of all why "Tawaif" needed! It's a Arabic Urdu word! Consent ke sath hota tha kunki aur koi option nahi tha!

Some kings or Sultans also married tawaifs as they were most of the time well respected and expert in the arts of dancing and all. It's not always that they had relations with kings and princes or rich men. Some girls were from rich families as well, who were sent to train in those arts.

Brilliant! What a fascinating piece of our history. And to think it took SLB's Heeramandi to bring this into our line of sight. Your video is very well presented, with exciting information. Definitely should be included in our school history books! Thank you

Not just in Medieval India Courtesans had a powerful and high ranking role in Ancient India too. They were not looked as prostitutes but as groomers, dancers, artists and were considered a nobility. They were given freedom from household chores and husband duties but were still respected in society. They were called Nagarwadhu. Ancient Indian texts are full of them. There was actually a high competition to be the nagarwadhu amongst rich women of ancient India.
