I've been listening to Gord Lightfoot sing this song for 40 years, and could never imagine anyone doing it better... But to listen to Cash sing this, in his failing voice, and knowing the life he lived.. the things he did... It's extraordinarily moving... In spite of this being Gord's song, you get the feeling the Johnny may have understood the lyrics even better than Gord did... Well done John...

Wow. This rendition left me speechless. A song sang by someone saying goodbye, knowing very well that the time has come to pull the curtain. I feel like I heard him
say in his trembling voice: I’m ready, but give me a few more minutes to come to terms with my life and what I’ve done. Such a powerful song, this half-singing/half-talking style just increases the songs fervor and anticipation. Only a great artist can transmit such a powerful emotion. Thank you Johnny, Godspeed.

Wow, this had me in tears, I know nothing about Johnny's life before June Carter, but he seemed to have it all with his first family, so sad to see how their lives fell apart. RIP Johnny

Grace and class. Not always a good man, but in the end a great man.

I like the song. Johnny did it well. It seems so appropriate, him singing it in his old voice. It's such a reminiscing song.

I'm not what you would call a Johnny Cash fan per se, but American V: A Hundred Highways was strongly recommended to me, so I bought it. I'm not a fan of cover versions either, but there are some exceptions out there - this is one of them. Listening to this track, in the context of him recording this in the 4 months between the death of his beloved wife of 35 years, June, and his own demise, moves me to tears every time. His rendition oozes more emotion in one line than what most artists achieve in a career. Epic.

Thanks for sharing this. First time I had heard Cash's version. I'm a Lightfoot fan and this is the only version that comes close to the original. True artists are rare. RIP

My two favorite artists - Gordon and Johnny - with the latter singing the former's song (which has been my favorite song since I was a teen). What a treat, thank you for posting.
