════════════════════ 10 Fun Facts About Venezuela ══════════════════════

1. In 1499, an expedition led by Alonso de Ojeda visited the Venezuelan coast. The stilt houses in the area of Lake Maracaibo reminded the navigator, Amerigo Vespucci, of the city of Venice, so he named the region Veneziola. The name acquired its current spelling as a result of Spanish influence, where the suffix -uela is used as a diminutive term; thus, the term's original sense would have been that of a "little Venice".

2. Venezuela has the world's highest inflation rate. With an inflation rate of 180.9% Venezuela far surpasses other countries with high inflation rates including Ukraine with 49% and South Sudan with 41.1%.

3. Angel Falls in Venezuela is the highest waterfall in the world and is 17 times higher than the Horseshoe Falls, which is the highest of the Niagara Falls. Angel Falls is named after the American aviator Jimmie Angel, who on November 18, 1933, became the first person to fly over them. Thus sharing their existence with the public and forever linking himself to one of Earth’s true natural wonders.

4. Gasoline is cheaper than water in Venezuela. You may be thinking how expensive can water possibly be? Well, believe it or not the fact that gasoline is cheaper than water has little to do with the price of water. Gasoline was only 5c/gallon a year ago. However earlier this year Venezuela had a price hike of 1329% in 91 octane gas. So how much is gas now in Venezuela you ask? Well its roughly $1 Bolivar per litre, where 1 bolivar is roughly 10 us cents. So a gallon of gasoline after the price hike will cost you anywhere between 30 and 40 cents. However even with this new high in gasoline prices, water is still more expensive.

5. In 1863, Venezuela became the first country to abolish the death penalty for any and all crimes, including serious offenses against the state like treason and military offenses in times of war.

6. There is a persistent storm at Lake Maracaibo, located in Venezuela. Lightning storms occur for about 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours a night, and as many as 280 times an hour.

7. There's a nightclub inside San Antonio Prison in Venezuela. The San Antonio Prison is located on Venezuela's Margarita Island, also home to a popular beach resort that attracts international tourists. The prison was allegedly run by a convicted drug trafficker known as "El Conejo" or "The Rabbit" who passed away in early 2016.

8. While the majority of the Amazon rainforest is contained within Brazil, with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, Venezuela and a few other countries have minor amounts of the rainforest contained within their borders.

9. The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are recognized as the largest in the world, totaling 297 billion barrels as of 1 January 2014. This is even more impressive as Venezuela ranks 12th in the world in oil production.

10. In 2012, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez rewarded his 3,000,000th Twitter follower, a 19-year old girl, with a new home. Many criticized Chavez to have rewarded someone in such a way for simply being a supporter, as the home was built with government money, not Chávez's money.

Now for an eleventh fun fact, military aviation in Venezuela dates back to 1920, when that country was developing its petroleum industry and establishing an industrial base, and expanding and modernizing its armed forces to include an air force. That year, Escuela de la Aviacion Militar de Venezuela was established, the first in South America. The dictator of the time, Gen. Juan Vicente Gomez, was an aviation enthusiast.
