The First Photos Taken of Every Planet in Our Solar System + Pluto (4K UHD)

For thousands of years, human beings have noticed certain points of light in the night's sky that seemed to move differently. Ancient Greek astronomers named these points "Asters Planetai" which means "Wandering stars". The term described many celestial objects, including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all of which can be seen at certain times of the year with the unaided eye from Earth. With the invention of the telescope back in the 1600s, these planets could be viewed like never before, and eventually, with years of continued observation, we discovered Uranus, Neptune and the dwarf planet Pluto. Then back in 1957 the space age started, with the successful launch of Sputnik 1 and since then probes have been sent all over the solar system on a mission to study these neighbouring celestial objects, sending data millions of miles back to Earth, Including some photographs.

Edit - unfortunately there is a mistake during the Mercury facts. The day side is a lot hotter! Reaching temperatures of up to 427 degrees Celsius! For some reason, I was thinking of the average surface temperature of Mercury and still got it wrong. Sorry!

i feel like the education system has really fallen behind in teaching kids about our universe. i can barely remember learning about the solar system in 3rd grade and then never did they talk about it ever again.

the universe beyond our earth is one of my favorite topics to talk about, and the thing that worries me is that not enough people are interested. so many people just go "eh, i live here and that's all i need to care about" but like how? how can you not be curious about what's out there? it pains me when people don't express interest towards space.

also, i suppose at the time i was in 3rd grade, the year was 2007 so the other dwarf planets were still very recent discoveries and hadn't made it's way around the general population yet, but we aren't taught about the other dwarf planets in our solar system. our solar system is so much more than just the 8 planets. you have at least 6 dwarf planets too. you have Ceres, Sedna, Eris, Makemake, Haumea, and of course, pluto. but hardly anyone cares about them.

Born too late to explore the earth, but too early to explore the galaxy.

Seriously though, I would love to know what lies beyond our solar system and discover what lies beyond.

My favourite picture from space is the first picture of the entire solar system that was taken by Voyager II. I like it because it was unexpected and it shows just how small we are and how even the smallest of things can travel so far and do something that is grand.

Space has always fascinated me, I’m used to seeing all of the high quality pictures of the planets. Thanks for showing me the first pictures taken by humanity, it shows just how much we’ve progressed as a species

It’s mad to think humans sent machines so far to take pictures of other planets all them years ago with basic technology, imagine what they could do now days! But seems like there not interested as much

I always think about how we now have HD close ups of Pluto yet when I was in elementary 18 years ago all we had were X ray image blurs or 4 pixels. Those blurs and pixels were so damn cool to me just thinkin about what it really looks like.
