A Story of Three Laughing Monks || A Powerful Buddhist Story That Can Change Your Life
This is a story about three monks who lived in ancient China. No one knows what were their names, as they Never disclosed their names to anybody. In China they are known as three laughing monks. Their only job was to enter into a village and start laughing at a public place.
After hearing their laughter, public would gather there and slowly everyone would start laughing.
These three monks were loved all over the China.
They never taught anything to anyone except the message of laughter.
Seeing them laughing from the bottom of heart seemed as if they had known the secret of life.
Just by their laugh the monks were spreading joy throughout the China without uttering a word. They would simply laugh even when someone asked their names. So they were popularly known as three laughing monks.
The monks grew older with time. One day, one of these monks died while staying in a village.
Everyone was eager to know the reaction of other two monks as no one had ever seen them cry.
The whole village gathered to witness it.
But for their utter surprise, they found the two monks standing beside the dead body and laughing non-stop.
When villagers asked them the reason of their laugh, the two monks spoke for the first time "We are laughing because this man has won”
We were always wondering, as to who would die first and this man defeated us. We are laughing at our defeat and his victory.
Not just this, we lived with each other for years. We laughed together and enjoyed each other's company. So the best thing we can do for him at this time is just laugh.
It was a tradition in China to change the cloths of the dead before putting him on funeral pyre but the clothes of the monk who died, were not changed, as it was his last wish.
But when they put the body on fire fireworks of different colours went exploding in all the directions in the sky.
Everyone present there was surprised and joined the laughter of other two monks.
Actually it was the plan of the monk who died, to hide crackers in his cloths. As he didn't want anybody to cry on his death.
After seeing this scene, the two monks said "You rascal, you are dead, but you have defeated us once again. Your laughter is the last.”
So what does this story teach us.
You see, no animal except humans has the capability to laugh. It shows, laughter is the highest point of consciousness. It is also the highest peak in the evolution of life.
Don't take life so seriously that it becomes a burden.
When you understand the deep secret of life and realise that nothing in life is permanent, your mind starts to calm down.
You start to laugh on seeing people fighting or crying over little or even serious issues. You finally understand the futility of nonsense arguments.
Have you seen little kids fighting over toys? We laugh at them when they fight over little things because we understand the futility of their cute quarrel.
But kids take the fight seriously. They cannot see the situation as we see it.
So we can laugh at them.
But what happens to us when we start to fight or cry at issues that we think are serious or worth fighting.
Well, there is no measure of how serious or futile an issue is. All depends on our level of consciousness.
What is serious issue for you, may be a stuff of laughter for another person.
So a person who can laugh on everything like these three monks, has known the futility and impermanence of everything, hence he can laugh on things.
Friends, once you realize that life is nothing but a cosmic laughter, you would be able to find laughter in all the things.
So keep laughing friends.
