In a candid interview with Dan Rather on AXS TV, Sammy Hagar delves into his tenure as Van Halen’s frontman, succeeding David Lee Roth. Sammy openly shares his perspective on Roth, stating, “I never really had a lot of respect for Dave. He was a good frontman of that style, but that wasn’t anything I ever wanted to be.”

Reflecting on his time with Van Halen, Sammy emphasizes the transformative impact he had on the band’s musical direction. He introduced a more sophisticated style of music and songwriting, shifting from party anthems to love songs. This evolution broadened their audience, attracting a more mainstream and diverse fan base.

Despite the success, Sammy acknowledges the challenges within the band, particularly his complex relationship with Eddie Van Halen. He describes their friendship as chaotic, yet underscores the creative synergy that propelled the band to new heights during his era.

Looking ahead, Sammy is set to reunite with Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff for “The Best Of All Worlds Tour - The Residency” in Las Vegas, running from April 30 through May 17, 2025. This residency promises a dynamic setlist, delving deep into Sammy’s extensive career, including his time with Montrose, solo hits, and Van Halen classics. Sammy expresses enthusiasm for the residency, stating, “I’m so looking forward to this residency and being able to stay in one place so we can get the sound and production completely dialed in.”

The upcoming shows aim to celebrate the enduring legacy of Van Halen’s music, offering fans a unique and intimate concert experience. With the band’s commitment to experimenting with the setlist every night, attendees can anticipate a series of performances filled with surprises and deep cuts from Sammy’s illustrious career.

In summary, Sammy’s reflections provide valuable insight into his pivotal role in Van Halen’s evolution, his personal dynamics with band members, and his unwavering dedication to delivering memorable performances for fans old and new.

If Sammy was that confident about his skills he wouldn’t be spending that energy trying to discredit Roth

I like Sammy Hagar, but I stopped listening to VH when Eddie broke out the synthesizers and started playing elevator music. In my mind, Roth's version of VH will always be the one people think of in years to come!

I like Sammy but what he did to Jason Bonham is not cool. I won’t be attending the shows in Vegas as a result.

Hagar is a hack. There is a reason why radio stations don't play any Van Hagar songs and still play DLR era Van Halen on a daily basis.
