As an Indian and a Hindi speaker, it is almost similar to Hindi! I like this language!

I am from America. I had a wonderful friend who was from Pakistan. When we were kids she would speak urdu to her parents. I always wondered the name of the language and now I know, it is so beautiful. I hope she is well, her family were wonderful.

Translation for non-Urdu speakers:
My name is Seema. I am 22 years old. I was born in Pakistan. I emigrated to America(USA) at the age of ten and have been living here ever since.
I feel I was much more attracted to my new surroundings upon coming here and felt I had left my old customs and rituals behind. I did not do so on purpose and it was rather the result of my new surroundings. Still whenever I talk with my parents or my relatives in Pakistan, we speak in Urdu. Hence Urdu is the medium for me to stay in touch with my former country and my relatives.But a strange experience I have had whenever I visit Pakistan is that I feel as an outsider over there. This is because I am constantly reminded of the fact that my thinking, behaviour and diction have changed a lot and become quite distinct from the locals. But for me, my first language gives me a sense of belonging to my first nation. I consider this country(USA) as my home but Pakistan remains my first country. Speaking in Urdu is a way to stay connected to my childhood and it brings back lots of beautiful nostalgia. These memories are with me but I can't experience them again. I feel if I stop speaking in Urdu, I will no longer have memories of those precious moments. It is difficult to put those emotions into words but Urdu gives me a feeling of calmness/peace.

It's interesting to see the similarities and differences that have developed over time between Hindi and Urdu since the India-Pakistan partition. As a Hindi/Gujarati-speaker, I can understand nearly all of this, but not some of the Persian or Arabic words.
