Legendary pianist Mikhail Pletnev performs Piano Concerto No. 1 (I Movement) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of legendary maestro Vladimir Fedoseev at the Primavera Foundation Armenia launch event on November 17, 2022, at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan.

This particular performance brought my mind back to the time when Horowitz was making his U.S. orchestral debut playing this identical work, alongside Thomas Beecham who was making his own debut. Beecham and Volodya had sharply different ideas as to tempo (among other things). Poor Horowitz dutifully followed Beecham for the first two movements, while feeling his audience slipping away, as he later recounted in many interviews. At the crack of the finale, Volodya decided to go all out, guns blazing! The result: he finished about a half-page before the orchestra, bringing the astonished crowd to its feet, and a superstar was born! Unfortunately, in this instance, the soloist has decided to take Beecham's tempo, and the audience remained firmly in their seats. There were some lyrical moments, but Pletnev & Co. missed the fireworks completely. A flat, uninspired affair, I'm afraid....🤔😬

Плетнев, разумеется, выдающийся музыкант, но мне, например, слушать его "сверхинтеллектуальную" игру тяжело. Весь перформанс состоит из "изобретений", в каждом такте! Как будто всё время говорится: "Вот послушайте, так еще никто вот тут не делал. И вот тут. И вот тут. И вот тут." Естественность теряется в бесконечном потоке идей, не объединяющихся в масштабное целое (как у Гилельса, Рихтера), не подчинённых какому-то общему видению целого, а как бы уже являющихся самоцелью. Профессионалу это слушать с партитурой в руках наверняка очень занятно, но... Но. Выдержать сие до конца не просто. Разумеется, всё дело вкуса, в конечном счете ))
