The Story Behind Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill

StrangeDevice explores the origins and meaning behind Peter Gabriel's first-ever single as a solo artist.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing, stretching every nerve
I had to listen, had no choice
I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Son, " he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
Hey, back home
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
'Til I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Hey, " he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
Hey, back home
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I wanna be
And liberty, she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Hey, " I said
"You can keep my things, they've come to take me home"

This song is going to be played at my funeral. It’s in my living will.

At her request, this was played at my Mother's funeral. She said the line "You can keep my things, they've come to take me home" was the most appropriate line for her memorial.

Always reminds me of when i got out of hand as a 16 year old angry scared young man. My poor mother was at her wits end being a tiny lil hippy woman from a quiet dignified line. One day my father called and " son I hear that you're giving your mother some trouble, how would you like to come down and work for me for a couple of years and get to know this side of your family and what it really means to be a man?" He told me the things I've been doing wrong were his fault and he was sorry. I don't know what it was but I decided right then to go. They were some of the hardest years of my life but I'll say this as I stand here today.... I work hard for a living, im polite, I do no harm to women or children and i protect anyone weaker then me. (Sorry for the rant got lost in the moment and the memories)😂❤ rip old man!

It always made me think of kids in foster care. Adults making all kinds of huge decisions about their lives. Watched by empty silhouettes.

For some reason this song reminds me of picking up my son at the psychiatric hospital after he got stabilized.

On top of the world or way, wayyyy down, "Solsbury Hill" never fails to inspire my spirit. Like Blue below, will be my Boot Hill song!

Have you seen the advertisement on television about the animals being slaughtered testing in labs used for fur and many other things that are being done to them by humans running to the song of sollsbury hill to reach freedom from all of their pain and misery and find their own paradise like it should always have been ❤love to them all
