COMING SOON: Shehla Rashid on ‘portraying positivity’, if she’ll join BJP

Activist and author Shehla Rashid’s new book Role Models: Inspiring Stories of Indian Muslim Achievers documents the stories of icons such as AR Rahman, Sania Mirza, and ISRO scientist Nigar Shaji, among others. But in one chapter after another, it also mentions the Narendra Modi government.

In this conversation with Abhinandan Sekhri, she talks about her book, politics, the BJP, stereotypes against Muslims, and her “new path”.

On the stereotyping of Muslims in the BJP’s Jharkhand election ad, Rashid says, “I can keep harping on the negativity. I have done that for the longest time and I have achieved nothing…Now I am trying a different route. I am trying to counter negativity with positivity.”

On the question of joining BJP, she says, “Who knows? Time will tell.”

One question that comes to my mind is why is she so persistent in making a point about how the path that she has chosen now is the right one? She has her own reasoning that we all know but why does she get uncomfortable when asked about her switch? It's obvious that she'll be asked about her ideological shift which was kinda absurd.

Rashid is an opportunistic person. She saved her on skin and let all her colleagues suffer at the hands of the administration. She is a perfect example of what the authorities want the activists to become after seeing the torture of other activists, journalists etc
