Scarlett Johansson says she's shocked, angered and in disbelief over ChatGPT using a copycat of her voice. Johansson is the voice behind an AI assistant in the 2013 film Her and says one of open AI’s ChatGPT bots’ voices sounds eerily similar to her own.
Now, open AI is stopping the use of Sky, the name of one of five voices that ChatGPT users can choose to speak with. And this comes after Johansson told Open AI CEO Sam Altman he can't use her voice.
Johansson issued a statement saying that Altman wanted to use her voice because he felt it would be comforting to people who are uneasy with the technology. But Johansson declined the offer.
Johansson said that Sky's voice is so similar to her own that her closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference.
Open AI reluctantly agreed to take down the Sky voice after Johansson hired lawyers to question Altman's process on how the company came up with the voice.
Altman claims the voice of Sky belongs to a different professional actress, but could not release the name for privacy reasons. He told the Associated Press the voice of Sky is not Scarlett Johansson's and it was never intended to resemble hers.
“Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky's voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn't communicate better.”
