He wasn’t a Drill Sergeant, he was a Drill Instructor

He was a Marine! Therefore he was a Drill Instructor!

The Army has drill sergeants.

I feel for the actor that was intended to play Gunny and was replaced, but if you need a Drill Instructor then nothing is better than a REAL Drill Instructor.

Example: in "An Officer and a Gentleman" (a 1982 movie, five years prior of Full Metal Jacket), Luis Gosset Jr was playing Richard Gere's Drill Istructor, and was using very similar phrases to those of Lee Emrey, but even if it is a good delivery by a good actor, it does not sound with the same impact...

I think it just wasn't just lee ermy stealing the role of gunnery hartman from tim colceri. They also had to rewrite the script because lee ermy claimed it just rubbish.
So pretty much lee ermy saved this movie from bombing.
