How wildlife crossings protect both animals and people

To protect the movement of wildlife impeded by busy roadways, a series of manmade overpasses and underpasses throughout the United States helps animals big and small safely get across the street, preventing collisions and saving lives. About 1,500 of these structures already have been built. Correspondent Conor Knighton looks at how they have protected genetic diversity in animal populations while also greatly reducing roadkill. He also visits the site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Los Angeles, which when complete will help cougars cross one of the busiest highways in the country.

We need more crossings like these across every state.

Speaking as a Zimbabwean wildlife conservationist, all animals deserve to be treated with Kindness, Compassion and Respect. God bless the good people creating these natural, safe corridors.

It’s so nice to see some good news of humans working towards being more mindful of coexisting with animals

Even as a kid I wondered why there were not bridges and tunnels for animals. I am glad to see they are doing this now, some 70 years late, but better late than never.

My mom was in 2 deer accidents when I was a kid just coming home from work. I’m so thankful she survived both. I’m so thankful these crossings are getting popular nowadays!

One of my favorite views when going over pass to Seattle. My granddaughter was in awe when I told her what the overpass was for.

Some months ago I read a book named " Crossings: How ecology is shaping the future of our planet "by Ben Goldbarg, in the book I was introduced to the world of " World of wildlife crossing " I had not heard of this concept, it's a wonderful concept, it is saving the wildlife and at the same time helped commuters to use lengthy roads with out the deaths of animals, such innovation are helpful. In India we hardly have wildlife crossing.

With how divided everyone is right now it's really nice to see something that literally everyone benefits from.

It’s embarrassing that humans didn’t have the foresight to see the need for these when the interstate system was initially built.

I've driven I-90 in Washington State for decades and still do as a tourist guide 3 to 4 times a week. These should have been implemented back in the 60's.

What a beautiful story. We as humans have to provide and protect our wildlife as best as we can it is a priority

Animal crossing should be standard part of highway building. One crossing for every one hundred miles seems reasonable.
