Talking about addiction, which sadly enough cost him his life before he was able to see how massively successful Sublime became.

These guys were very instrumental in starting a musical sub-genre that is still thriving today. Cali-Reggae or SoCal has many flourishing artists to this date. Bradley Nowell started Skunk Records in 1990 that many of the current artists, like Pepper, Slightly Stoopid and others have put out releases under. Got a couple killer playlists with this genre! Great chill vibes for sure. RIP Bradley 🙏

This song is about addiction to heroin. He uses several surfing references as metaphors, but it is about turning to drugs when life gets too overwhelming. "I dive deep when it's ten feet overhead, grab the reef underneath my bed." Essentially, when a huge wave (the hardships of life) is about to crash on me, I grab the reef (heroin) underneath my bed. In another part of the song, he wishes he never started using. "I swim but wish I'd never learned, the water is too polluted with germs." This one is a little bit more hard to pin down, but a "badfish" is someone who gets someone else hooked. These are the three elements that I see in this song. He regrets ever starting to use heroin, is pained by the fact that he has started others down this road, but ultimately, this drug is his only refuge in life. He keeps turning back and binging when times get tough.

One thing about Sublime is a lot of the lyrical content is about something negative, but it set the most good vibes music that you don't even notice. A badfish is a person that introduces someone to heroin for the first time. For me one of the most chilling lines in the song is "Ain't got no time to grow old" - The lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose at the age of 28.

Sublime is a such a good vibe. 40 Oz to Freedom is a classic. Instantly takes me back to summertime and getting baked in college.

Bradley Newell, vocals, guitar, writer...was a big surfer but also a huge drug addict. Terms like "duck diving" and "10 feet overhead" are surf lingo. But lines like " lord knows I'm weak." "When you grab ahold of me, tell me that I'll never be set free." refers to drugs. Namely Heroin, which he died from an overdose of. He was a new father yet locked himself in a motel room and was found dead a couple days later. This song is about struggling with drug addiction with surfing as a metaphor. Keep kicking out the Jams, mofuggas!!!! Love the channel and Lex is a smoke show!

Still breaks my heart knowing he couldn't walk away from the demon drug. So talented and different.

“I swim, but I wish I never learned. The waters too polluted with germs.”
That line always resonated with me. I’ve never been addicted to drugs thankfully, but I have had other addictions that set me back one way or the other. I always think my life would be a lot better or I’d be in a different place had I not learned of those types of things. That’s why this might be my favorite sublime song

I saw sublime on tour for this album in Hollywood with "The Lordz of Brooklyn". Their song "Date Rape" was the first breakthrough for them on LA radio and It was an amazing show and I had no idea I was witnessing history

One of my all-time favorite bands. Started listening when no one knew them then Bradley sadly passes away.

I love Sublime so much and miss them. My two favorite songs of theirs are “Get Ready” and “Slow Ride”. I hope you explore them more. Bradley was a musical genius and blended genres with ease. We lost him too soon. Thanks for the reaction. 😊

One of my favorite Sublime songs, hands down. Like others have said, if you like this vibe, Pepper (from Hawai'i), Slightly Stoopid, and even bands like Dirty Heads and Rebelution bring a similar vibe. And then, of course, you have Sublime (featuring Rome) and the Long Beach Dub All-Stars, which have many of the original musicians from Sublime in them.

I would love to see you guys do a whole live show on just Sublime, you'd have a great time chilling and grooving.

A song about pain, escapes from pain, and the vicious cycle those escapes can cause, ending in more pain.

You'll want to check out their punky side as well: Same in the End, Saw Red (w/ Gwen Stefani), Seed.

You guys might not care for the subject matter, but Sublime did a great version of the Toye's song "Smoke Two Joints"

One of my favorite bands of all time. Especially since I grew up close to the beach, and was a teenager when this came out. And he was a dog lover, And brought his dalmatian Lou dog with him everywhere he went.
