Facts of the case Cassidy v. Daily mirror newspaper Ltd (1929) is that, Mr M and Miss C were already a married couple. And the statement published by the defendant was that their engagement has been announced. The wife of Mr M pleaded that the newspaper publisher is showing something like she is living with Mr M in immoral cohabitation. Therefore, the defendant were held liable. It was further held that when the words are considered to be defamatory be the persons to whom the statement is published, there is defamation, even though the person making the statement believed it to be innocent.
