Supplies:
Surface: Ampersand Art Encaustic Board
Media: Encausticos Wax Pigment Sticks
Brushes: Hog angular 1/2" a #4 round
Silicone Spatula
Coffee Mug Warmer & Aluminum foil for palette
Stamped tissue paper
*I also use oil pastels from a previous smart art box for more color options

Encaustic art directions:
1. Cover the coffee mug warmer with tin foil and melt your color on it.
2. Use a brush or silicone spatula to quickly transfer the melted wax to the painting board.
3. Clean the brush by "rinsing" it is clear wax medium and wiping it on a paper towel. The brushes you use for encaustics will need to be kept for encaustics as you will not be able to remove all of the wax.
4. Embed collage element on the the painting using hot wax as a "glue" if desired.

Tip! A heat gun on low can be used to rework an area of a painting. Just make sure not to get it too close to the painting and use caution.

This is my favorite smart art box yet and I hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

Loved how the black stamping and the red edge just highlighted the bright colors and finished it off. Don't think I would have been so brave!

I do use a pancake griddle but I put a muffin tin on it to use as a pallet. keeps the griddle clean. you can also melt some of the clear and then melt some color into that to use. it will make the color sticks last much longer.

Thanks for demonstrating encaustic painting. I'd seen beautiful pictures using the technique but never understood exactly how they were made. Very nice.

Very pretty!! I made a really cute fairy hot wax painting years ago that I just love, but I just used crayons and melted them. Worked wonderfully and had any color I could have ever wanted and I could also mix colors too! It's a great way to use up any old broken crayons also!!! 👍🏼

You did such a great job. Learned a lot. I specifically search painting with wax because I had a feeling it could be done. And low and behold, probably an ancient art form.

I know this video is old, but thank you very much. I had not thought of the foil + warmer trick, just what I needed to add a little control to my works. Also, using the clear wax to clean the brush, and applying the detail at the very end. Brilliant. Thank you

You make everything seem so easy least, which makes me feel like even *I* could do it! God bless you, Lyndsay. 😃💖

A friend gave me her old, scratched-up pancake griddle. I use it for encaustic alone. You are right. It is a very satisfying medium. i don't have the paint yet. Just playing with melted crayons for now. I thought you were supposed to fuse each layer. I loved that you used oil pastels. I was wondering about using those. It was fun watching you have so much fun too. Thanks for sharing. Your result is beautiful.

Ooooohhh! That looks so cool. I have drooled over the encaustic items in the art store catalogues so many times but just didn't know where to start. It is so helpful to watch you experiment with all the different techniques. When I did batick card projects with rice paper, watercolors, and melted wax I had a terrible time with my paint brushes blobbing up; you did much better keeping yours clean and usable. I didn't have hog bristle brushes and they obviously work a lot better than the synthetic brushes I used. I think I would stop before adding the tissue paper, but you saved it really well. Good job.

Looks fun. I had to check out more videos and discovered the heat gun is perfectly fine, in fact torches are fine. Looks like fusing the layers is really a big deal and the melting of the texture is part of the fun, as well as carving down into it. Found a great primer called R&F Encaustic Painting Demo: The Basics on Leslie Guiliani's channel. You can use pan pastels, oil paint, transfer images, all kinds of fun stuff! Would love to see you go back and try this again.
