Refurbishing a gas turbine engine for better energy efficiency gave Advatech Pacific the chance to demonstrate topology optimization used in combination with metal 3D printing. But the optimization is only the beginning—the design process still needs an engineer’s touch to arrive at a 3D printable part. The final torque arm in this case study is 45% lighter than its conventional counterpart and incorporates both nonintuitive, software-driven features and human touches.
