Is it Really 'CINEMATIC'?

The word cinematic seems to be everywhere when it comes to the filmmaking community on Youtube. But what does cinematic really mean? Is it really as simple as just entering the correct camera settings and voila, now your footage is cinematic? In my opinion, there's much more to it.

Gear I Use:

Camera (A) - Panasonic GH5
V-log Upgrade for the Panasonic GH5
Camera (B) - Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (Original)
Lens Adapter/Speedbooster - Viltrox EF-M2 Speedbooster
Lighting - Godox SL60W
Microphone - Rode VideoMicro
Monitor - Feelworld F6

I’m glad you made this video, I feel the same way. It’s a buzz word at this point, people use it cause I feel helps draw in beginner filmmakers. But the meaning has been almost completely lost. Keep up the content, I love your stuff!

Finally a VIDEO that pinpoints the misuse of the meaning of the term cinematic. We can also go one step further and state that youtube vlogs are NOT filmmaking! It's video making!

100% spot on. I think the word everyone was looking for was "fad."

Have to admit though, I was pretty happy when I learned that "cinematic color grading was as easy as leaving my shots in log and just adding a little teal and orange. easier than all the crazy bullshit I had been doing before!

Yeah that word been thrown around so much that I really get annoyed hearing it. I have seen only one person talk about cinematic being lightning, story, audio+sfx, Set design etc. Frame rate, shallow depth of field, aspect ratio are only small parts of being cinematic. There have been plenty of film shot in 48, 60fps with f4, widescreen 16:9 but they look amazing

Kinda like the games industry use of the word cinematic, I have a degree in cinema and no that's just vanilla Hollywood.
