Meet the diving bird, the Kingfisher, also known as the fishing bird. As their name suggests, kingfishers are famous for their hunting ability, which involves diving into the water to catch fish. They are a family of big, heavy birds found all over the world, ranging from small to medium-sized with brightly colored feathers. They consume a wide variety of prey, but what makes them known is their dives. Perching on a branch overlooking the water, they wait for the perfect opportunity to dive. With an amazing understanding of how water refracts light, they accurately judge underwater depth as they dive at high speeds with their needle-shaped feet, sliding down the water effortlessly. They have a translucent eyelid called the nictitating membrane that covers their eyes to protect them when they hit the water, allowing them to keep their eyes open while diving.
