As a 50+ yr old American, I and most kids I knew had their tonsils and adenoids removed by the age of 10. It was sort of routine in the 70s, although I suffered terrible strep throat and ear infections as a child. I had never heard of this until the Internet. None of us really had tonsils.
It was also a time when antibiotics were routinely pumped into children for just about any sniffle.
