William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. Gretchen Peters openly admits that she composed her song with his original poem in mind. The white-haired gentleman in the final photograph is the poet, W. B. Yeats.

When You Are Old

When you are old and tired and grey
Wear you overcoat on sunny days
When your brave tales have all been told
I'll ask for them when you are old

When you are old and full of sleep
And death no longer makes you weep
When your body aches with cold
I'll warm your heart when you are old

You'll still be the same to me
A comfort and a mystery
And I will be old too, you see
I'll need someone to comfort me

When you are old and pale and gaunt
And a gentle hand is all you want
I will give you mine to hold
And I'll be here when you are old

Yes I will give you mine to hold
And I'll be here when you are old

When You Are Old by W. B. Yeats

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

I met Ms. Peters after several shows at the Bluebird Cafe. She is a beautiful person inside and out. Very cordial and sweet. Check out “Breakfast At Our House”, another great song she wrote and performed. I said, if jewels could sing, they’d sound like Gretchen Peters.

We had this played during the signing of our wedding vows 13 years ago. Gretchen had just been highlighted on the Terry Wogan breakfast show. We married at ages 55 and 58, so it is a special song for us, beautiful.

What a great songwriter you are. You weave melodies of emotion in and out of our consciousness, ,How did Shania Twain find your beautiful song, Dance with the one you love, I would love to know. Warmly Tony LORIE. Recording artist

Thing is, the lyrics are better than the poem.
