Just a couple of days ago I had to choose the path of going through pain. I cried hard because I didn't want to go that route, but imagining not going through it was even harder.

Just hurting yourself is not worth trying it though. You must want it very much and it will help you to endure the pain or the effort it takes. Just throwing yourself into stress in hopes of success can hurt you and left you with no sense of pride or accomplishment. And others will only see success anyway, not how much effort it took or how not even rewarding it is for you.
