I’ve been struggling with this same issue and just found your video. The comments helped me out! My tray was stuck open and I thought I broke it but I think it’s good now. Thank you!!

The problem is that the paper level sensor arm jams the tray when the paper tray is empty (which is when you most often want to remove the paper tray). The solution is to shove in a stack of paper about 1/4" thick (50 sheets or so) and the tray will slide right out.
This is a design defect, can anyone call it to the attention of an HP design engineer?

Hope you got this fixed already, but just in case, try this, it seems to work for me: There are two small buttons on either side of the paper tray cover (the light grey "lid" with the paper stop). Press and hold those two buttons down simultaneously, and slide the lid off. Once the lid is removed, the lower main tray should be easily removed. Add paper, replace the main tray, then slide the lid back in until the buttons click, and press the "OK" button on the touch screen to continue.

It's not you're not smart enough - HP aren't good enough to design a decent printer. Why would you want to fill the tray when it runs out when you're printing. HP make their money from selling ink at a higher weight price than gold. If they put 1% of the effort they put into forcing you to buy their rip off ink into printer design they'd have a market winner product. Sadly, they couldn't care less about their customer experience.

I literally just bought a new HP 9015. I could not open the tray of my old 9015 so I turned it upside down to inspect and somehow ruined the cartridge tray thing. Anyway just set up the new one and it’s doing the same thing!!! HP DESIGN FLAW. I left a comment on their website. Hope they fix it.

Solution: squeeze the curved grey piece inside the tray on the front left until it clicks to release the tray to slide it in or out.

With the printer shut down, try standing the printer upright with the base and the underside of the tray facing you. You should be able to pull the tray out if the base if lifted up a bit when pulling. Once you get the hang of it, when the printer is powered on and in the usual horizontal position, you should be able to pull out the tray.

inside there's the 8.4 X 11 button you hold that down and it will smoothly open the tray and close it back, but first open the tray slightly then press the 8.4 X 11 button and hold until it slides all the way out for you to put printing paper of any kind, it worked for me

THANK YOU! I too was going crazy and about to destroy my printer before I read these responses. It should be this hard. Quality control in manufacturing is lacking. Otherwise happy with the 9010.

I just purchsed a brand new brothers HL 2370 printer and the paper tray will not pull out so that I can load it with paper. It seems like its glued shut.????

Doesn't HP EVER "live" with their own products??? Jeez, they ALL do this! EVERY HP printer of this general design that I ever had does this. WHAT UTTER CRAP!

This is the worst printer ever made. THE PAPER TRAY LOCKS SHUT. WHY WHY WHY WHY.

I hate it so much. My heart is black and twisted.

Great I thought it was just me too or dirty rollers underneath but as much as I clean the rollers the problem contines. So now I know it is a design fault so I will just keep the paper level topped up and not let it run out totally. Cheers

A corollary to this problem is the printer’s insistence on making multiple (i.e. many, too many) sets of multi-page documents, when you asked it to only print one set, or even one page. The waste of HP brand ink, both in black and in color, is atrocious. After market inks are not compatible with this machine. The HP printer instructions are skimpy in at least 5 languages, and provide NO guidance on problem solving. On the last few lines of any printed page, it is likely that it will print three lines 2 or 3 times, ruining the copy you wanted to make. However it is better than cheap Epson printers, which don’t work at all.
