I just now found out that Melonpans have literally nothing to do with melons, except for the texture on top.
I thought they where Melon flavoured pastry. Damn

@Mudan - You mixed up the voice overs over the wrong consumer reviews around @5:20

As someone from Europe, I'd say pointing where to put the money without saying a word is not "normal" here 😅 But I see your point. In Japan, the general politeness/friendliness is fantastic. Maybe that's why it stands out even more when they're rude

Did this type of comparison with croissants once. Have not bought supermarket croissants ever since. The taste of handmade versus factory baked was astronomical.

"like it is still quite bready on the inside but I figured the problem with the last one was it just didn't have the crunch on the outside, this has the good crunch on the inside, so the bready inside this has the good crunch on the outside so the bready inside kind of like fills it up more nicely"

Totally unrelated to bread, but this is a plug for a potential interesting video: As an entomologist, I have to ask, what are the coolest insects you've seen in Japan? (Excluding Kakuna and Metapod, and their relatives) 😋

I love Melonpan, grew up eating it in Taiwan. Never realized the crusted sugar squares on top are cookie doughs tho! 😂

So, when did the windchime earring become fashionable, and when will it go out of fashion so I know when to take mine out?

Kimuraya in Ginza slaps, oldest bakery in Japan, the anpans are awesome (sweet cream cheese in 10/10) and so is the melonpan, highly recommend if you haven't had enough baked goods!

Best Melon Pan - though non traditional as it has a melon cream filling. Hakone Prince Bakery.

Pretty much all foodstuffs are hit-and-miss, even from the same location. Change the ingredients by a slight amount, the temperature, the person cooking it... any little variable alters the flavours. Thanks, fella~! What sorts of wacky things will Mudan get up to tomorrow?

I’m such a weeb I can’t see Melon Pan without thinking of Shakugan no Shana.

I saw that show over a decade ago.

I blame the fact that I’ve never seen Melon Bread here in the USA.

There are many specialty bread stores in Japan that make original breads, so there are many types of breads, such as tastier breads, salted breads, and breads topped with side dishes. Naturally, these old breads that have been around since the Taisho and Showa eras cannot compete in taste with these breads.
However, most stores still make sweet breads like bean paste bread, cream bread, and melon bread, as well as traditional breads like Japanese milk bread, which I think is because they are made for a traditional and symbolic purpose rather than to compete in taste.
I think Japanese people also buy them as a nostalgic taste, a taste that they sometimes crave.

One thing I have heard is that Japanese people are VICIOUS in their online reviews.
