Evan Chapman - 'Opening' from Glassworks by Philip Glass (Marimba) *HD*

A little marimba ditty. Originally written for solo piano, this is a beautiful piece of music composed by Philip Glass. I saw a fellow classmate do this arrangement at his percussion recital at IU and I got inspired to do it myself. Enjoy!

PS - Sorry about the loud buzzing that gets louder and louder. My MacBook decided to be a bad audience member and was making lots of noise. Hope it isn't too distracting!

Glass's pieces almost always convey a certain subtle anxiety; in this piece it's almost nonexistent, & you've captured the softness & elusiveness of that perfectly. Such a wonderful performance.

I know this is a decade old, so I'm late getting to it, but it's gorgeous.

What's really nice about your performance is that the eighth vs. triplet rhythm in the piece is probably not something often encountered by pianists, but fairly routine for percussionists. You nailed it.

Really very beautiful. The Marimba has such a lovely dreamlike warm poignant sound.

I like how your extremely focused look contrasts the calmness of the song.

My purest congratulations man, spend last hour playing it on piano; came here and find this: hypnotic, tribal taste and crystalline, beautiful.

(fascinated from Spain)

Sounds great, so subtle.... and what a fantastic skill one must have to play an instrument like this. Well done, Evan Chapman, I hope you record many more pieces by Philip Glass, they sound just right on marimba.

Fantastic! Besides your technical command of the instrument, the feeling is just right.

I love this so much. The simple complexity of it really comes out when you can see the relationship of rhythm and tone on this instrument.

I never used to write comments on youtube, but right now i can't help myself. That is pretty astonishing. He's got me stuck on repeat

I remember seeing Philip Glass in concert in '82,  as he was promoting this album . . I loved it . . and oddly, there were probably about the same amount of people in the audience then as have commented here on this piece . . But that being said, it allowed me the ability to leave my seat in the back, and step right up for a great seat . . . . Now excuse me while I move on and listen to Ennio Morricone's the Good, The Bad, and the Ugly on the Sweet Potato

Beautiful work. The dynamics of Glass’ solo piano works translate so amazingly to percussion. The swaying polyrhythmic flow is wonderful. Thank you.

Mesmerised by your ability to capture Philip Glass's enormously relaxing classical piece. Well done!

Really enjoyed this. Great piece of music, beautifully played. Found you after listening to Steve Reich's Piano Phase. Wondered if you'd give that a go if you haven't already. Either way, thank you.
