Gary Johnson: What is Aleppo?

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson stumbled while answering a question about the Syrian refugee crisis, asking "what is Aleppo?"

Just faced this on a job interview. I knew a lot about the field but had seldom used the terminology. Came here to pay my respects. Sometimes you have your Waterloo, sometimes you have your Aleppo.

To be fair, it's an awkwardly phrased question. "What would you do about the Syrian Civil War" or "What would you do about the refugee crisis" make far more sense.

To be honest, I think he should sort of be admired at least to some degree for admitting that he didn’t know... he could’ve just pretended to know but he was humble enough to ask!

There was no reason to ask the question by saying Aleppo instead of "the refugee crisis in Syria". The question was poorly formed.

I honestly think, from this guy’s tone, and especially from the way he enunciated Aleppo the 2nd time, and the smug look on his face, that this was a calculated attempt to make Gary Johnson look bad.

I feel you can kinda tell from the way the reporter says "Aleppo" the second time that it was a deliberate test from the beginning to see if he knew what Aleppo meant

It was a gotcha question.  Barnicle provided no context.  It's not like they were discussing the Middle East and then he asked him.  He just came right out of the gate with the name of a city that isn't that well known, and then when Gary didn't understand he responded with mock articulation.  It looks to me like Gary thought he was saying "a leppo", and didn't know what a leppo is.  I have no doubt he's up to speed enough on the Syrian refugee situation to be president, even if the name of the city of Aleppo didn't instantly register with him.
